NBC has cancelled The Playboy Club, its high-profile attempt at going retro in the Mad Men style. Though a setback for the Peacock Network, the cancellation opens up the Monday night, 10 p.m. slot for Rock Center with Brian Williams.
The first new primetime broadcast to come out of NBC News in almost 20 years, the newsmagazine show will debut Oct. 31st, NBC announced Tuesday.
The Playboy Club had lost about a third of its audience since its debut three weeks ago, drawing just 3.4 million viewers Monday night, according to Nielsen. On CBS, Hawaii Five-O, the top-rated series in the time period, garnered 10.9 million total viewers.
“Monday is the most competitive night,” said Brad Adgate, director of research at media buying agency Horizon Media. He pointed out that network series are up against Monday Night Football on ESPN, and that viewers are often watching time-shifted shows from the 9 p.m. slot at 10 p.m.
PAN AM is doing better, but its ratings have been dropping.
