"On May 5, dairy farmer Mark Nolt emerged from a court hearing in Mount Holly Springs, Pa., to find a band of supporters applauding him.

His crime? Involvement in a local black market: raw milk.

The Mennonite dairy producer was arrested April 25, then charged and fined for selling raw milk and other raw dairy products without a permit. Police seized and destroyed more than $25,000 worth of milk and some equipment at his small farm in Newville, Pa."


Apparently there are not enough meth labs in rural Pennsylvania to keep the authorities busy.

1. I used to be able to get raw milk at my health food store. Guess big dairy felt threatened.

Now I tend to use either soy milk or almond milk.

raw milk. Thinking about going in with some other folks and all of us buying a share of the cow just so we can have it.

And your point about the meth labs is dead on. Really, they do have bigger fish to fry. :hi:

I don't know anyone local to me yet (farmwise) that sells it on the farm. I live somewhat close to a number of farms so theoreticallyI should be able to get some but I would want raw milk from grass fed cows, not corn fed ones.

grass fed. We joined our local food co-op and it seems to be an on and off again conversation.

ETA: I just found out I can buy it here directly from the producer as long as I bring my own container. Might be distance prohibitive, tho. Although it's all local, many of the producers are quite a ways away.

8. oh yeah the law of unpasteurized milk

Oh the horror of it. Undulant fever, TB, and such. For 10 years when our kids were young we bought unpasteurized milk illegally in Virginia. We never had a problem, the cows were well cared for and healthy, and our cats had the most beautiful coats I have ever seen. I had cream for my coffee and fresh butter. We moved to NC and then bought a goat. It just wasn't the same. I could not get the cream to separate (although someone on here can). The kids (human) wouldn't drink it because it was goat milk so I started putting it into store cartons and they unknowingly drank it for months until one day I was caught by one of them.
You bet if I could find someone here in NE that I would trust to sell unpasteurized cows milk I would buy it in a heart beat.
