Aquaponics.
Does anyone here have any experience with the above topic? I've been reading up on it recently. It is the process of using fish-farm effluent as fertilizer for hydroponically grown produce. Apparently, a 300 gallon tank of water can support about 150# of Tilapia. The species is fast-growing, and reaches one to two pound (harvest) size in 6 to 9 months. In turn, this quantity of fish can sustain 600sf of growing beds. The only input to the system is replacing the water lost through evaporation and food for the fishes. (Worms can be grown for this purpose)

I have a source for a tank and materials for a greenhouse so I think I'm going to give it a try this summer.

Back of the napkin calculations suggest 200# of fish and far more green vegetables than my family could eat each year.

Its awesome and great. Check http://backyardaquaponics.com.au :)

Crap went wild.. Its a understatement for sure!

Was not really great on the electric bill but I wanted to test it in the middle of the winter. I created a greenhouse in my garage (had cops show up once) by summer I went from 500 gallons in there to 6000 gallons in the yard :)

SPEED GLORIOUS SPEED!

Note: Tilapia are illegal in many states.. you can substitute with other fish I used goldfish as they shit all over the place and eat as much as you give them.. I had about 130 in there.

You can also try your luck at the local lake or whatever... Get trout, bluegill etc. I caught trout and kept them alive in 75 degree water.. It is doable but not ideal... Fish is fish in terms of excrement. If you want something pretty go with koi maybe? But please dont violate laws.

5. Lake Perch
are a good choice for cold whether locations in the winter. Tilapia in the summer/fall, perch in the winter/spring.

4. Your going to need 80 plus degree water for the tilapia

and a LOT of aquatic plants to bio-clean it ..consider 50-80 % underwater cover.

Then you are golden and can also start playing with hydroponics... carefully

btw I am no expert
