The girls are back! Brocade marched right back to the nest and plopped out a lovely big egg...

... which they all visited and cackled over. Oh, they were all so proud of that egg. :rofl:

I took a trip and was gone almost 2 weeks, so hubby insisted our daughter re-board her former chickens. He then was sorry he'd done that, but now that I'm home I have them back. All four of them are making it abundantly clear that this is their real home. They all remembered their jointly-chosen spot for laying eggs -- they produced so promptly it made me wonder if they'd been holding it in or something -- anyway, I now have one humongous brown egg and two green ones.

I just had to share. They make me happy. Now all we need is a real chicken coop instead of the dog crate.

They came to me without names during the Jesusita Fire when my daughter and her family had to evacuate, but it was so obvious who they were: Big Red, Little Red, Brown Brocade, and Golda. Little Red is very affectionate. Big Red likes to stand on top the dog crate giving me the beady eye through the kitchen window.

I find them all delightful, really. Hubby rolls his eyes and calls my kitchen window "Chicken TV."

We'll be traveling together in July, and I haven't figured out who to ask to take care of them yet. Hubby suggests I start taking eggs around to the neighbors to see who shows interest. Pretty much all that needs to be done with them is to let them out in the morning and pick them up off the top of the crate at dusk and toss them back into it. That and check their water bucket.

Somehow I don't think we'll have a real coop done by then...

6. To post, open an account at photobucket.com (it is free)

Then copy the photos to your Photobucket account. Now once the photo is on the account I then right click on the picture and an pull down list comes up. I score down to "properties" and left click on it. An "Element Properties" box comes up and I copy whatever the jpg file (that is the reference to the picture). I then paste that copy into the message I am typing in DU.

Now once the picture is in Photobucket you can edit the copy in photobucket.

If the picture is to big (or to small) you can go back to the photobucket picture and hit the "Edit" mode for that picture, which is right over the Picture in the Photobucket collection. Once in the edit mode hit "Resize" to make the picture to be the what you want it to be on the screen.

Please note, be careful how you set up your pictures. Once you copy the jpg number onto the message board you have to keep it there. If you later move it, when someone reads your thread nothing will come up.

4. They like my fruit and veg scraps a lot. Do I have to worry about overfeeding?

They're quite happy scratching for bugs and stripping seeds off my fennel, oregano, and lemon balm, but they also think peels and cores are a real treat when I open the magic window and toss them out.
