The baby chicks came in yesterday.

I lost one, but the rest look really perky.

I have Buff Orpingtons, Golden Polish, Dark Cornish, Columbian Wyandotte and Partridge Rock hens in this batch. I think my free exotic chick is a white crested Polish Rooster. The colors are amazing and i love the little pouffy hats on top of the Polish birds.

Nothing brightens your day more than a box of baby chicks!

1. Well, now things are going to get a bit 'broody'

5. Someone gave us a rabbit hutch years ago, so it is sitting

against a wall in the chicken coop. We have a heat lamp mounted in a corner with cardboard sheets around two sides to block the draft. The chicks can move under the lamp or away as they feel like it. As they get bigger, they wander to the far end of the coop where I have some tree branches and such to explore.

I thought the downer chick was OK for a while. I brought her in the house and sat her on a towel on a heating pad. I also fed her some sugar water. She seemed to be perking up. She was sitting upright and peeping, but when I checked her again an hour later she was gone.

9. It happens, it happened to me a lot with Rock Cornish crosses

the Barred Rocks seemed to do much better.

6. Cheep, cheep, cheep...ad infinitum.

8. Well, that's only when they're cold. When they nice and warm and happy,

what you hear is an occasional little whistle or trill, with an occasional soft peep.

I just checked them. It's warm here - 65 degrees, so they're all sitting in a circle out from directly underneath the bulb.

I think they happy - unless sitting in a circle means they're all plotting against me!

10. Did you get them from Murray McMurry?

Mine came Monday the 19th. I got a mystery chick too and have named it Zhivago.
Most others will never be named!!!! :evilgrin: Almost one week later they have doubled
in size. They are nice and safe in the barn under the heating light. but for the first
time in 3 years saw 2 coyotes out back of our yurt. The ChocLab found them first,
but they didn't run away till we went out there. Much fortifying of the coop area needs
to be completed. All chicks came in healthy and alive. Got 2 ducks too.
