Arkansas Black
Edited on Sat May-08-10 11:41 PM by Dover

Anyone growing Arkansas Black apples? I've read they are mighty tasty and store well.
Would just like to hear from a grower. Thanks.

1. I never heard of them until a couple of months ago ...
then found this interesting short article:
http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=2100

I don't have a farm or orchard, but I'm hoping to take a few saplings back to Mom's place when I leave Arkansas. Will have to wait to see how they do there.

2. Thanks for the link. I've been reading about this apple and opinion

depends, perhaps, on the grower's location. It seems to me that the further south one goes in this apple's growing range the less people like it. So maybe it really does do best in Arkansas. Just wanted to hear some other opinions. I first read about it some years ago because one of California's top chefs thought highly of it. Of course it's all very subjective too.

3. We planted an Arkansas Black Apple tree 2 years ago.
Since we live in Arkansas, we felt like we had to.
It is growing well.
No apples yet.
I'll let you know in a couple of years.
:hi:

5. haha! Well of course you have one.
And I'm guessing it feels very much at home in the hills of Arkansas.
They sure make pretty apples.

I guess I was curious about how it does further south. But I will
be interested to hear your impressions of the taste. It shouldn't
be too long before you get a harvest. Yum!

4. I have a tree, but I have yet to get apples.
The tree is only a few years old, and fruit production in my area is inconsistent. Some years trees bear, some they don't, depending on late frosts.

6. Do you mean you have an apple tree or you have an Arkansas Black apple tree?
If it's an AB I'm curious if you planted it and if so, why you decided on that variety?

Hope you get some great apples from it soon. I'm guessing it will be worth the wait.

7. I have an AB tree, among others.
I chose all my trees based on hardiness, since our area has some harsh conditions. I'm looking forward to future crops!

8. Living northern WA, I wanted one but decided against it due to growing season
I'd like to hear if anyone in northern tier has one. They sounded like really good apples.

9. I had never heard of an Arkansas Black until last fall when we purchased some at a roadside stand.
They had very good flavor and really crisp flesh. They make an excellent cooking apple. My DIL enjoyed them so much that they bought a tree from a local nursery this spring and planted it in their back yard. The texture reminded her of the Asian pears that she is so fond of.
