Pea fowl ? I've kept chickens for many years now and have had fair luck.

Would pea fowl roost in the same chicken house, or are they too big? We get some pretty cold weather here. It doesn't bother the chickens, but how would pea fowl do in an unheated chicken house?

My neighbors tolerate the chickens - we have a wide field on either side of the house so ther is some space between us and them. How noisy are pea fowl?

1. It seems they would be too large.

How about guinea fowl?

2. Oh - I know that that would be a bad idea in this locale -

they fly too high and are too loud!

Pea fowl are just an idle fantasy, really. I can afford to lose a couple hens to foxes, but not a $50 bird!

3. I have a friend who raises both with no problems.

But we're in Phoenix so I don't know how cold you're talking. It gets plenty chilly in the open desert on winter nights but rarely sub-freezing.

The peafowl have free reign of the yard and they are noisy. They caw like hell and like to run across roofs. If you (and your neighbors) can handle it they are very entertaining. The funniest sight for me was when I saw a peacock fanning his plumes and strutting around before two peahens who were entirely unimpressed. Seriously, it was like you could see the thought bubble saying "Yawn, whatever."

4. you haven't had a stay peacock move in?

i stayed with a lady with a chicken house and a pair just moved into her chicken house. the chickens didn't lay for a while. then the pea hen got nabbed by something-fox, hawk, coyote. didn't see the male til we were about to leave. WI has quite a few feral peacocks.
just need a big enough hen house i think.

5. They're noisy. They have one call that sounds very much

like a child yelling "Help!" In the California town I grew up in, which was a citrus-growing area, quite a few of the farmers had peafowl, and there were loose ones everywhere. Many showed up in the town, and stood on roofs, yelling "Help!" They caused lots of rather funny problems.

they only make noise during spring and early summer breeding season, I have mine penned in a 30x 100 shade house turned aviary here on the farm.
