One of my hens hatched two chicks; sorry, I don't have pictures,

5. For some reason, my hens have poor success hatching eggs.

I suspect that the other ladies keep laying their eggs in the active nests, so the older eggs get buried or rolled to the outside and eaten by the other hens.

I tried setting up about ten nesting boxes for them this year, and for a while I had five broody hens. Two of them ended up sitting on no eggs at all!

8. My grandmother always placed a white porcelain doorknob in the

nests/boxes for the settin' hens. I have no idea what purpose they served. They were away from the hen house - in the barn, the implement sheds and the tool house.
