Time to cut hay
Got the sickle mower on the tractor and air in the tires of the hay rake. Baler greased and set.

5. Carbon foot print of the tractor or the cattle that eat the hay?

I'm not going to apologize for farming. I've wondered if this thread would accept posts from those who are part of the rural lifestyle and economy.

7. I used a 1950 ford tractor from 1983 to 2009. Then went green.
And I'll take the new one.

9. Oh, yeah.
I had a 1954 Case SC that I sold last summer.

Sort of like this one, but with a lot less paint:

12. goood on YOU!
do You sell Your hay, or is it for Your own cattle, or both?
& do Ya make the small rectangular bales or those big ole round bales?
Mmmmm..that just-cut-hay smell..!

I'm kinda partial to the old farm equipment (& farmers!)
but efficiency/"green" machines make SO much sense.

American Family Farmers = American HEROES.
Don't ever forget that, ok?:patriot:

6. What model JD is that, and why is your ROPS down?

Here's a shot of my little beast--not exactly set up for haying.

8. 5103. 45 hp. Hay meadow is flat as a pancake...
and tractor is too tall for barn if ROPS is up. When I'm brush hogging bar ditches and other less friendly spots I put it up. Of course I have forgotten to let it down and the barn says "ouch" when the ROPS hits it.

11. Nice little tractor.
These smaller JDs are pretty economical on fuel, too. I don't think my 790 uses 1/2 gal. diesel in an hour of normal operation.

15. You bet, I can mow, rake and put up 160 bales for about 6 gallons of diesel.
Fuel cost is insignificant when compared to the price of baling wire at $68/box. I'm gonna be real close on getting it all baled without having to buy 2 boxes. There goes the "profit," whatever that is.

14. I'm thinking about sprigging one of my pastures for hay
Glad I did not do it this year because of the drought here in North Texas. I just bought 100 bales for $6.85 a bale. I'm tired of paying high prices for it and I would love to learn how to bale it myself.
