DU SKS owners - anyone have any expierence replacing the stock?
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 09:09 PM by TornadoTN
I'm a rather novice gun owner up until this point - mainly just buying my firearm and perhaps adding a scope. However, my father gave me a SKS-M model recently and I've become enamored with some of the modifications (all legal and within ATF specifications) that can be made to the rifle. Of particular interest to me is replacing the stock with a Monte Carlo stock by ATI.

I've searched the 'net for information and there are a few good sites out there with info on dissassembly/assembly of the rifle. I haven't found anything on replacing the stock, so I'm curious if any of you have made this type of modification to your SKS. I think it would be a neat project to dive into and give me a better understanding with the internals of this type of firearm.

1. Don't know if these will help, but...

here are some detailed instructions w/photos on SKS disassembly:

http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/disassemble/index.asp

There is also a 9MB video of disassembly here: http://www.surplusrifle.com/videowmv/sks100.wmv

Once you get it disassembled to that point, you can probably just take all the hardware off the old stock and put it on the new stock, if the new stock doesn't come with it.

My wife owns a 1952 Tula (Russia) SKS, with the Soviet star on the receiver cover. It's a fine-looking rifle (looks new), and she enjoys shooting it.

You are probably already aware of this, but if you make any changes other than the Monte Carlo stock, you may need to play the 18 USC 922(r) parts count game. American made parts to satisfy 922(r) are available from www.tapco.com. They also sell MIL-STD-1913 rails, adjustable stocks, etc.

2. Thanks for that info, that certainly helps!

I'm all too familiar with the 18 USC 922(r) provisions. I was looking into making the changes to the stock and came across that tidbit of information which threw a big red flag in my face. So, I started reading about it and luckily, all of the modifications I want to do will keep me within regulations.

That surplus rifle site is excellent. It pretty much walks you through the entire process, which is some comfort to me because I don't want to ruin the rifle by making a careless mistake.

Cheers!
