Cold, windy, overcast and off-and-on drizzle had the deer up and about; I think they couldnt' figure the weather and worked overtime to eat. I got caught walking up a lane by two bucks; may as well have been butt-naked and singing Bob Wills songs. But I stayed still and they whiffed my trail and merely walked in a straight line into the brush. Obviously, they were sniffing doe _______. And just as obviously, I wasn't going to get a clear shot. One of those guys had a South Texas rack, even though we were in the southern slopes of the Edward's Plateau. But an hour later I still hunted a mesquite flat and saw an adult spike Axis. I had to off-hand a shot and missed. Fortunately, the Axis just stepped a few feet further and froze, looking for the sound source. I made another 120 yd. off-hand and hit him through both legs and chest. He went down 60 yards later. These guys are great tasting, deep wine-colored meat.
Damn, you got a turkey, too? I hope to get another chance at them this season. I will be at Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge in Travis Co. this weekend (predicted mild but possible rain Saturday). I've scouted this place out and hunted it before: rugged, 410' elevation within 3,700 acres; 10 other hunters out there, too. Rough hunting. Well, my project Wednesday is to butcher and freezer wrap Axis, bold as love!
Hey, Redneck! This was supposed to be under Bear, but hell, congratulations to you, too. I'd love to try and hunt in the snow -- doesn't happen too often in Texas.
