OK fellow yachtsmen, what kind of boat/boats do you own
and are they in good working order? I've got a Whaler Outrage with a Yamaha 115. I also have a decrepit, 13 foot dory/skiff that I should sell, but just can't get a round tooit.

1. Rag boater here. Currently boatless but sailors are never anything
but yachtsmen. Sometimes between boats but always boaters.

Started with a Catalina 22 and graduated to a San Juan 24. Next boat will be bigger . . . always bigger.

Good shape? There is a black box that the Gods who watch over sailors keep your luck in. Every time you do something right, like extra maintenance, they throw another bit of luck in. When things go really badly, and they will, and all you can do is drop the sails, close the hatches and go below they empty your box of luck. If you've done enough you get by.

2. A Sunfish under a Minifish rig (sort of a Frankenboat).

It's a work in progress; it sails great, but I still need to do some fiberglass repair here and there and then paint it.

The sail, rudder, and daggerboard came out of an 8-9' wooden kit boat my dad and I built when I was 13-ish (may have been a Bolger design, I'm not sure) out of marine plywood and a Minifish sail and running gear. My little sister and I raced that boat for a couple of years in a local class, then used it for pleasure day sailing. I ended up keeping it for 20+ years, sailing it in both NC and Florida, until the wooden hull finally dryrotted. I kept everything but the old hull, and then last year I spotted a 14' Sunfish hull (a late 1980's AMF/Alcort) in a neighbor's yard. The boom and rudder of that boat were broken, the daggerboard was lost, the sail was in bad shape, and the hull needed some minor repairs. But I just happened to have all those parts from our old wooden kit boat, so I bought the old hull for $200, and here we are.

The hull still needs some fiberglass repair, cleaning, and painting, the Minifish rudder is a bit kludged (need a new one at some point), and I am in the process of installing a 6" port in front of the daggerboard trunk, but the boat sails beautifully. :)

Here's a photo, tied up on a local lake:

3. I'm not completely without boat, I've got a sunfish too.
Also have a 7' stitch-n-glue I built for my grandson. I'll rig it for sail next year--he should be old enough to sail by then.

4. I'm taking over a friend's small sailboat,

a 22ft Sea Witch. Almost nothing known of this maker of boat, alas. I know she's nearly 45 years old, and according to my buddy verrry well made and an extremely "dry" craft. Twin keels, means I can poke around in the shallows too. It's going to be an endeavor getting to know more about her, but I am very excited. She has been up on blocks all winter (see pic below, from March I think) but is since painted, and virtually ready to go...may be launched in the next couple of days.

Meet Erin:

5. I sold my Venture Newport (sailboat) to.........
my nephew last year. Now it lives on the Chesapeake. It is a cutter rig with bowsprit.
In return I bought a couple of kayaks for my wife and I. We love them and the mobility that comes with owning kayaks. A lot less stress because I sailed on a large lake and the powerboats were making me nuts.
Oh yeah, the gas mileage ain't bad either but , then again, either was the sailboats.

6. Slocum 43 sailboat, which I live on full time.
No slip, no mooring and completely off the grid.

Unfortunately, she was broadsided by a 56 foot power boat in November and has been in the yard since then, but she will be back in the water in about two weeks, and I will be out of Los Angeles again! Yippee!!

7. If only I could afford a 150K sailboat. LOL, the thought of
paying for the slip and maintenance around here for a boat that size freaks me out.
I am keeping my eye open for nice 32', or so, length boat. My old boat was a cutter rig but I am now open to a ketch.
We'll see. My ideal would be to find a boat around Annapolis, keep it there and have a place to get away to from CT.

8. I sold my house and bought the boat. In the end, it is saving me a lot of money.
No utility bills, low insurance, low property tax. Granted, maintenance is high, but I still come out on top.

We had a 32 foot prior to this and it was great, but not quite big enough for living aboard full time, particularly because people just love to come and visit with you live aboard.

I wish you the best of luck in finding your boat. Ours has been in the boatyard for 5 1/2 months, but we are leaving (finally!) tomorrow and I can't wait.

:hi:

11. Westsails are nice boats. They won't get you there fast but...
they will get you there safe.
I used to have a MacGregor Venture Newport which is cutter rigged. Nice trailerable boat which led to the upgrade to the Catalina 34

10. Now a partner in a Catalina 34 sailboat.
Spent last weekend replacing the heat exchanger, water pump, all engine hoses, and took off the shaft to replace with new. Will be in the water in the spring.
