I just bought another rifle for my "Armory".

I have a standard M1a already and have been looking for a "scout" version of the same rifle for a while now. I was passing by my favorite vendor of "evil assault rifles" today & decided to drop in and see what they had in stock. I rarely get to that part of the state but I was nearby today. I saw the rifle, I offered 50 dollars less than asking price & it was mine. I could have ordered it for 50 less than I paid but this was in stock.

I hadn't planned on buying it today but it was there!

1. Beautiful!
Good-looking rifle, do you plan on adding an optical sight like that one to yours? What is it like shooting through an eyepiece that far forward anyway?

2. Right now I am researching the options.
I am putting night vision on this one, my 22" M1a has day optics on it. I have rifles mostly for self defense & pest control. (coyotes & wild hogs or whatever needs to be stopped)

I would like to add a few more over the next few years, they will all be M1a's. I bought a LOT of surplus .308 ammo when it was cheap, I have plenty of magazines for that type of rifle. I was thinking that if I have two 16", two 18" & two 22" lengths I will be done. (with rifles)

3. I've only got a cheap Tru-Glo for my AR
it is a CMMG, great gun, but I haven't taken the time to zero it even yet. I usually just put the iron sights on it though, I am mmore familiar with them due to the three months of training and all.

4. I was issued an m-16 in the Marine Corps, that's why I don't own one.
In my opinion the round isn't up to snuff. There is NOTHING you can do with a .223 that you can't do better with a .308 round. I can hit out to 500yards with a .223, 1000 yards with a .308 if the wind is right.

5. .223 isn't as bad as many claim
especially when it's actually 5.56 loads, .223 with the proper configuration can be very effective for close quarters, see rounds like the MK 262 for a good example. The heavyweight .223 bullets do a great job at breaking up under a far wider range of velocities than the leighteights do, and more lead in target is never a bad thing. I just think the .223 AR is exactly what the M1 Carbine was trying to be, but with more reach and power. Plus .223 tends to do pretty well at not busting through several rooms before flying off down the street if you do miss.

But you are right, the .308 is certainly more of a cartridge in every way.

6. I wouldn't have any problem with owning an AR.
I used to own one but then I decided I would just stick with one type of rifle & the M1a won the contest. I only have to buy .308 ammo, only have to buy one type of magazine and for the most part the spare parts are interchangeable. The reason .308 won in my case is I live in a rural area & 7-800 yard shots aren't out of the question.

I am glad I am not tempted by other types of rifles, I could get myself in trouble with the old credit card if I started collecting!

7. I wish I had the income for a stable of M1As!
If I were in an area like that than .308 or 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC would have won out as well, but my CMMG is a perfect weapon for the area I am in, and besides, being a Guardsman I realize I don't go to the range nearly as often as I'd like. The weapon immersion that everyone goes through in Basic is a great way to maintain familiarity and basic skill, and I figured if I had my own I would not only practice more, I would be more comfortable with the system. I just added a 12 gauge to the small collection, which will almost certainly be taking over the home defense duties.

I have to say though, that the MSAR STG 556 is looking mighty good to me as a possible next rifle. It wouldn't be any radical departure from my current, just another .223, probably get an 18" though, but I have always had an attraction to the Steyr AUG, and being able to own a slightly improved high-quality clone appeals greatly to me, enough that I might be willing to put off widening my capabilities until sometime even further down the road. I really need to just man up and apply for an FFL so I can open up shop.
