Who's Excited About The Upcoming Deer Season?

Man I can't wait! I've been bowhunting for the last couple of years and I'm gonna buy a muzzleloader this season. With all the deer being hit by cars where I live I'm gonna take as many does as I can and donate them to Hunters For The Hungry. Can't wait to hit the field!

1. I'm ready to go! Deer are all over Texas...

and I have two friends who let me hunt on their land! One said I might HAVE to get two, since over-population has become a real problem. Last year I got one whitetail and one Axis deer, the latter within sight of the Nueces River in upper Uvalde County. I saw a trophy buck, but could not get a clear shot, and several other whitetails.

Hunting in Coryell County, I got a whitetail out of a field of 18 deer, feeding on grain stubble. Way too many deer.

But on Labor Day, I will be in Coryell County for dove! It's a toss of the dice: last year I got two dove there; the year before, a limit before 9 a.m. In between, I'll scout for deer on my friends wonderful 115 acres of farm field, over-looking mesa, year-round spring, and lots of oaks.

I also applied for public deer hunts in Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge (wonder, wild, rugged land just 40 miles from Austin) and in a state park near the Highland Lakes chain about 30 miles further out.

Nothing like Fall in Texas. Where will you be hunting?

2. In central Virginia

I live in a town that allows bowhunting inside of town limits to reduce the population and I muzzleload & gun hunt on private lands out in the sticks. I'm fortunate enough to have a job where lots of people know me and let me hunt their land. I can't freaking wait! I would like to kill a big buck but I want to take about 5 does to reduce the overpopulation and donate the meat to Hunters For The Hungry.

4. My Dad, who passed in 2006, gave this advice about hunting...

Always bring the subject up in a crowd; sooner or later, someone who has land will share your interests and invite you to hunt with them. Some of the best advice I got.

We have an active Farmers and Hunters for the Hungry in the Austin area. So far, the deer I've taken have been eaten by me, but if we have to take extra ones, there is a way to get the deer to people in need.

I hear Virginia is a great place to hunt with beautiful woods to get lost in.

3. Still a couple of months to wait up here.

Not being a bow hunter I have to wait until the beginning of November for muzzleloader season to open. :-(

5. I'll tell you what...

Once you take your first deer with a bow, you'll be hooked! They allow crossbow hunting here in VA as well, although I'll use a traditional bow until I'm too old... ;-)

too many toys, not enough time. :)

There's lots of things I'd like to do, but limited free time and money at times make me an unhappy man.

7. I hear ya...

For the most part, I got the time...but the money is killer. I want to get two more ladder stands and a muzzleloader...lot of dough for my budget though. My advice for you if you do decide to get a bow...buy a cheap one and put cheap sights and a whisker biscuit on it. Even the slower ones today are way more than enough to kill deer. You could be ready to hunt for under $400...maybe even $300. But these days, that's a lot of gas & food money right there.
