Anyone care to make a recommendation on a rifle?
I'm wondering what the opinion here would be on the best rifle meeting certain specs. Has to be semi-auto. Chambered for .308 Winchester or the equivalent 7.62x51 NATO. Detatchable magazine strongly preferred. Equally adept at short or long distances. Needs to mount a decent scope, nothing ridiculous.

Anyone got suggestions?

1. I'd look at any of the Springfield Armory M1A models.
They tend to be expensive but are very well made. Here is there web site http://www.springfield-armory.com/

2. The M-21 Tactical looks perfect.
My economics don't allow for a purchase right now, but it's a sweet machine and seems almost ideal.

3. I had to settle for an AR-15, I got a great deal on it though.
My wife just got a huge raise though so maybe there is an M1A in my future.

4. "Settling" for an AR-15. :)
Not to put too fine a point on it, right now I'm living in fantasyland for at least the next year for something like this, but I wanted to check that what I was looking for was actually out there in the proper caliber.

5. A guy I know walked into my office..
and said he was selling his AR-15. I asked how much he said $500 with 8 magazines and 500 rounds of ammo. SOLD. He ended up buying a DPMS in .308, he's very happy with it. You might want to look at them as well.

9. You didn't "settle," you freakin' STOLE.
That gun is worth at least twice that, plus a few hundred more for the ammo and mags. Insane.

7. I'd look at the Browning BAR or the Remington 750...
unless you have your heart set on an EBR (evil black rifle)

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/family.asp?webflag_=002B

Much better looking guns then the AR knock offs IMNSHO. }(

10. The BAR Safari looks nice.
I've got no set ideas about the looks, the performance/specs are the major priority. If I had the choice, I'd probably prefer something in a wood finish, since it wouldn't look quite as unnerving on the rack.

8. I don't own one, but if I were in the market for one...

I'd be looking at a DS Arms (DSA) civilian FAL with a flattop scope rail (not the traditional smooth top).

The Armalite AR-10 and similar offerings from DPMS, Knight's, etc. are just as good. If you like traditional straight stocks, a Springfield M1A would be a good choice. With quality ammunition and good optics, they can all be quite accurate.

Or, if you don't mind waiting a bit, the Kel-Tec RFB .308 is interesting and promising.

It should come in both a carbine and long-barreled rifle variants. Should be available in February or so.

12. I have a FAL, and, while it may not be as accurate as some, it has
been 100% reliable, and really fun to shoot. 20 shot mags, built in the US from British Army LAR parts by Century around 2001. One of my all time favorite shooters in over 50 years of shooting.

16. And the FALs don't kick you as hard as most .308 semis do.
I had one of the Century rebuilds back in '92 or '93;
great fun to shoot. IIRC, it was made from Canadian surplus parts.

Worked 100%, and kicked like a 30-30.

Sweet.

13. just curious

When asking for recommendations, would it not be usual to identify the particular outdoor activity for which the item in question is to be used?

14. Odd to see you over here.
Anyway, I didn't see it as being relevant--whatever you're using it for, the basic function is hitting the target, no? Target shooting being the main use, actually. And I compromised because I found a fantastic deal, so I'm getting a bolt-action instead.

I have a modified 22-250 - 27" barrel - 1-1/2 inches in diameter

Yeah - 1-1/2 inches thick with a .22 inch bore - it's heavy

Classified as a bench rest target rifle

Ya can't hit shit trying to hold it like a normal rifle because it weighs almost 10 pounds.

No good for hunting unless you have support for the gun somehow

Besides - that's a lot of gun to be carrying for hours in the bush -

But man

That thing is accurate - last time I did serious target shooting(haven't been able to afford the rounds lately at $1 per)

At 300 yards I could consistently hit within an inch of the bulls eye.

For a scope(which I no longer have) I used a 10x40 with parallax adjustment

I used to own a bunch of rifles but this is the only one I kept after our gun registry thing came in

OH - and I used reloads, did the research, and gave a local gun shop the specs of what bullet, and how many grains of gunpowder to use.

Rated muzzle velocity was 4,300 feet per second

Oh yeah - one heck of a gun!

17. Savage model 12.
I have the .223 version. Mine makes one hole at 100 yards if I do my part. It's very heavy and really only for shooting from a rest.
