1. I had a snake charmer

when I was a kid it was fun what are you going to use it for and maybe I can give some pros and cons?

2. will be third gun purchase

had a 12 gauge shotgun many years ago...lost in divorce.

now own a .22 Ruger pistol.

considering purchasing one of these because it seems cheap to target shoot and versatile enough for home defense.

3. A 410 will do OK for home defence

If used with slugs. Trouble is that follow up shots are slow. Better a 20ga pump with a 19" barrel.

but you cant use slugs with a snake charmer it has a mod choke barrel on it but you can use 000 buck

I would look at a 20ga or a 12ga, look around at gunbroker.com or pawn shops and newspapers for good used one. I have seen browning a5's go for around $350 look at the mossberg mav 88 if you don't ever plan on modding it if you do look at the moss 500 or rem 870. You can find good deals from 150-320 it just takes time to look around, also you will find that 20ga and 12ga shells run cheaper than .410 and you can shoot skeet too.

But if you have your heart set on the charmer go for it I had a blast with mine when I was a kid till I got a rem 870 I mowed lawns all summer for it I still have the rem(lot of work to get) and sold the charmer for a slug barrel for the 870 just have fun be safe and enjoy the outdoors :hi:

6. As far as defense goes, a .410 slug weighs about 87 grains

At pretty unimpressive velocities, I would pick something else.

Also .410 is more expensive than 12 guage and I'm going to go out on a limb and say 20 as well, because it is not nearly as popular. Economy of scale, even though the twelve uses far more material per shell. More recoil from the twelve, but with something like a pachmayr decelerator pad and low recoil buck or slugs it won't be bad, and will be pretty ideal for home defense.
