CNBC Remington Under Fire - Safety Hazard Remington 700 Rifle?

The Remington Model 700-series rifle —with more than five million sold—is one of the world’s most popular firearms. Famous for its accuracy, the rifle is now the target of a series of lawsuits alleging that it is unsafe and susceptible to firing without pulling the trigger. Remington insists its rifle is safe, trusted, and reliable, though a trail of death and serious injury dating back decades has prompted critics to ask whether this iconic American company has compromised safety in the name of profits, and gone too far in trying to protect its signature product. Senior Correspondent Scott Cohn’s report is the result of a 10-month CNBC investigation.

1. My biggest complaint is the loud "C-L-A-C-K" the safety makes when released...

It has scared away at least one deer and caused others to mill about. I have taken to releasing the safety with one thumb while my left hand is covering it, to reduce the noise. I have not had a problem with inadvertent discharge, though I am aware of previous news stories indicating that possibility. I DO disassemble, clean and lubricate the rifle as per manufacturer's instructions, and will after this season have the trigger inspected and adjusted to eliminate some creep. If the smith offers a deal on a Timney trigger group (with safety), I might take him up on it.

2. I have both a 600 and 700

The 600 is 308 and the 700 is 30-06

Both have discharged when putting the safety on. Love them both, but the 600 took off a bit of my boot when it decided it wanted to discharge. I blamed it on myself, then read an article 15 years ago 3-4 years after the fact) about the problem...That November the 700 did its thing...The barrel was pointed to the sky at the time.

3. Recently, Remington re-designed its trigger group...

and installed it in the X-Mark Pro. But it appears not to have been used universally. Remington really ought to start using a new trigger group for all its rifles, and frankly, they should re-call the rest. It's a sore point in the history of one of the best factory rifles available.
