Has anybody here gotten into Geocaching? |
|
I just got my GPS unit in December and finally got out to hunt down some elusive Geocaches last month.
What a HOOT!! Great fun!
I love the motto I saw from a link on www.geocaching.com
I use multi-billion dollar military satellites to find tupperware hidden in the woods.
What do YOU do?
I live in a semi-rural area in a very populous county so I have thousands of Geocaches to search for without having to drive really long distances.
It is a fascinating, world-wide activity.

1. My dentist told me about this |

It sounds like a blast. I'm a cartographer anyway, so I think it would be especially fun for me.

2. As a cartographer, you might be able to search out some w/o a GPSr |
|
If you can figure out the coordinates close enough from an accurate map the Geocaches can possibly be found without a GPSr.
However, from reading the Forums over at the Geocaching site, I've learned how devious some of the hiders can be. I found one cache in the top of a PVC pipe marking a buried Fibre Optic cable. THAT was really a fun one to search out . . .
Some of the multi-level puzzle caches are very intriguing.
The FTF (First to Find) prizes in some caches are worth middle-of-the night drives and hikes . . .

Hope to do more this summer. It is really fun to have something to feel productive while outdoors between hunting seasons.

It's great fun. I use a Garmin EMap. I'm moving to NY state soon. I'm looking forward to doing some caching up there.

What purpose do they serve?
Now I can justify a modest unit to replace the used one I got at the flea market.
