Happiness is a torn up thumb!
I caught a mess o' bass today. Mostly largemouth with a few smallies mixed in. It is pre-spawn here and the bass are stacked up, find one and you've likely found a bunch. Not much size wise, my five biggest only totaled 12-13 pounds, but it was a beautiful day and I caught the hell out of 'em.

2. Sorry man, didn't mean to bum you out.
It was a good day. I probably won't be able to get back out on the water until this Sunday. Damn, work sure does cut into my fishing time. :grr:

4. I've never shot a garand...
I take it there is some risk of tearing up your thumb? Howzat work?

FYI grabbing bass by their lower jaw is a common way of landing them. Their "teeth" are like rough sandpaper and if you land a bunch the skin on your thumb gets torn up, hence the subject of this thread.

5. I realized what you meant after looking...

A common malady of the Garand was releasing the bolt too quickly when pushing the magazine follower down with the thumb, leading to "M1 Thumb". This is done when closing the bolt without the en bloc clip in place.

I have just grown up hearing about and avoiding the M1 Thumb.

I could barely raise the weapon, and if that wasn't enough, got the shit smashed out of my thumb. Caught it right behind the thumbnail. Still have flashbacks.
