Optics question--Kobra, or red-dot on a scout mount? (Gun related)
I've decided I'd like an unmagnified optic on my SAR-1. I currently have a 4x scope on it, but given that 7.62x39mm is pretty much a 200-yard cartridge, I think an unmagnified optic would be a better fit for the rifle.

I'm torn between a Russian Kobra holographic site (which mounts on the receiver siderail) or an Ultimak forward rail to allow me to mount a cheap Wal-Mart red dot. Does anybody here have experience with holosights and red dots to be able to compare the two?

I'm leaning toward the Kobra for quality reasons--I haven't been terribly impressed with the quality or durability of Wal-Mart optics, and the Kobra is tough as nails--but wondered if a cheap red dot on a scout mount would have any obvious advantages. (I can't afford an Aimpoint, so the question is cheap forward-mounted red dot or high-quality rear-mounted holosight.)

1. Update...got some good feedback on the High Road,
and weighing all the factors, I decided to go with a Kobra EKP-8-02. A lot of shooters have had bad experiences with the Wal-Mart red dots quitting after a few hundred rounds, and the Kobra is much more durable, as well as being parallax-free.

Will give a range report as soon as it arrives...sold my POSP 4x24 today...
