CLEVELAND, OH – Ohio Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, whose younger brother, Perry, 51, passed away yesterday of apparent natural causes, has cancelled several planned campaign events over the next several days to spend time with family and friends through Christmas. The campaign schedule will resume sometime later next week.
Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth had planned to be in California over the weekend for an ambitious, high-energy "Peace Train" whistle-stop tour beginning in Oakland Saturday morning and ending in Oceanside Sunday evening. Accompanied by leaders of various peace organizations and supporters, Kucinich was planning a series of rallies, town hall meetings, fundraisers, and train station events in towns along the route. The events will continue as planned, but he will be represented by key aides from his California and National campaign staffs.
"Dennis was extremely close to his brother, and this is a very sad time for him, his other brothers and sisters, and the entire family," said a campaign spokesman. "The outpouring of support, expressions of sympathy, and prayers from people all across the country has been inspiring. We know that our friends in California, New Hampshire, Iowa, and everywhere across the country will understand why Dennis and Elizabeth can't be with them at this time."
Funeral services for Perry Kucinich, a talented, self-taught artist whose works were influenced by Klee and Picasso, will be on Saturday, December 22, at 10 a.m. at the Golubski Funeral Home, 6500 Fullerton Ave., in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood. Congressman Kucinich said he is planning to assemble his late brother's works for a memorial showing and tribute sometime in the spring.
