Victory for Kucinich supporters in North Carolina

IN NC, the progressive democratic caucus helped to get a grassroots organizer elected as state party chair, over the wishes of the governor a conservative democratic. We worked against the machine of the state party who brought in very heavy hitters and we were able to get Jerry Meek who was very helpful to the Kucinich organizers last year elected as state party chair. I would like to encourage everyone to get involved in your precinct organizing, we are going to party meetings and volunteering, when the precinct meetings take place, progressives are there ready to volunteer to be precinct chairs, that puts us on the executive committee for the counties, and we have gotten many elected to the state executive committee. There is power in this work, please get involved. If we want to take our country back, we have to become a part of the democratic process, though it isn't always fun...it is necessary.

North Carolina Democrats delivered a blow to Gov. Mike Easley on Saturday, choosing a favorite of local party activists over Easley's choice as state party chairman.

The state Democratic Party's executive committee elected Fayetteville lawyer Jerry Meek over Raleigh attorney and lobbyist Ed Turlington, a veteran party organizer and confidant of former vice-presidential candidate John Edwards.

Meek's victory reflected discontent among many county and precinct leaders, inroads by the Republican Party in Democratic strongholds, and an apparent generational shift within the party.

1. This is exactly how the party will change

This is very exciting news. The Democratic Party will not change by electing Dean chair, by holding protests, or by giving up on it. The Democratic Party will change when Progressives become precinct committeemen, elect liberal Democratic Party Chairs at the County level, take over thier local party, and then force the statewide party to change. If enough states do that we will have transformed the party at the national level.

Congrats to these NC activists! This is exactly how to get things done.

But after last year's presidential election, the left wing of the local Democratic Party came to power. The "Kucinich Democrats" are now well-organized and have been exercising their power at the grass-roots level, by getting people elected to represent at the state Democratic Party's meetings and such. So we'll see.
