Alex Beam in yesterday's Boston Globe

Perhaps you have seen the ads for ``full sedation dentistry." It's offered all over the country, to people who need dental work but are terrified by the needle and the drill. The patient goes under general anesthesia and wakes up with choppers like George Hamilton. ``You dream, we work," is the slogan of one California-based dental group.
Here is my proposal: ``full sedation citizenship." In my version, a medical clinic will administer long-acting, general anesthesia for as long as it takes to escape the nightmares surrounding us. ``Wake me up when it's over," would be the operative slogan.
Can you imagine it? You take the gas, you wake up, and suddenly there is no . . .
Joe Biden running for president. What do we have to do to discourage candidates like this? Yesterday's man? He's yesteryear's man, some guy who thinks because he appears on ``Meet the Press" in August when the real politicians are on vacation that he is a legitimate presidential candidate.
I know. I could be more charitable. Biden is a senator from Delaware, and coming from the Small Wonder state , as it is called, visits to places like Ames, Iowa, and Laconia, N.H., must seem pretty darned exciting. Biden needs to find a way to campaign without opening his mouth. Desperate for Dixie cred, Biden recently blurted to Fox News: ``You don't know my state. My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state has the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a Northeast liberal state."
Joe, we can't find your state on the map. We couldn't care less how many African-Americans live there.
Does Biden ever look in a mirror? He must see a graying statesman exuding Founding Fathers-level gravitas. (Didn't he clerk for Gouverneur Morris, or am I just making that up?) I see an old guy with hair plugs, nattering on about nothing. Joe, if I give you $50, will you go away?
