Thank you Senator Kerry for standing up for moral decency
My heart is hurting right now and I have tears in my eyes. We all knew that this session of Congress was going to be awful, but we had no idea how awful. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the Rethugs would go after the most basic freedom in our laws, the right to know what charge it was that put you in jail. Never did I ever think that I would live in a nation whose leaders proudly proclaimed a right to torture the innocent or refuse a fair trail for a defendant. I hurt in places I didn't even know I could hurt tonight, more so because some of the names of Democrats who voted for this were, I thought, friends of liberty. Betrayal always hurts most of all.

Thank you Senator for all you have done in this awful Congress to uphold true American values and to show that America doesn't have to abandon morality to enforce the law. Sometimes I feel like I am in a rowboat adrift on a vast inky ocean with no light and no safe harbor in sight. It is comforting beyond words to know that there are people out there who are fighting America's slide into dictatorship, it really is like finally seeing that light that signals that even though I can't see it yet, there is a safe harbor nearby.

I believe it has taken an incredible amount of courage to stand up for what you believe in in this session and I thank you for it from the bottom of my heart. You give me hope and that is an incredible gift in these miserable times that I will never forget. May God bless you and keep you and your family safe. I look forward to working with you to, quite literally, save America from it's own worst impulses in the coming years. I hope you and the other brave Senators who stood up for liberty and decency know that you really do have people behind you who have your back.

Thank you sir. It means more than I can say.

1. (Tay, it looks like you are sending out a universal distress signal)
Thank you, Senator Kerry for being a bedrock we can count on. My regret is that you are stuck in the damned Senate! I want you in the executive branch. Period.

2. I am
I can think of no more distressing thing than the abandonment of basic liberties.

These are things that we boycotted South Africa for doing in the 80's and 90's. The actions taken today are reprehensible and they signal and America in deep, deep moral distress.

3. You should send this to him
It is so strong and beautiful. This has to be intensely painfull to him. His speech, even in the short form given, was extraordinary. These people who voted for torture are his colleagues.

He really is our best hope for gsining any sense of morality.

5. He's all that keeps me from abandoning hope.
If he can go through what he's gone through and fight as hard as he does, I owe it to him, to myself, to this country not to give up.

What an awful, black day.

6. This is very lovely, TayTay.
You express so beautifully how we all feel about our brave and noble leader. Have faith. All is not lost as long as we keep on believing.

It was a sad day, but sometimes it takes something this extreme to change the hearts and minds of a people. We need to shout this travesty from the rooftops.
