From a Dow Jones article:
Instead of bringing in a panel of economists and environmentalists for the 9:00 a.m. hearing, committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer,D-Calif., will hear from her fellow senators. It's all part of Boxer's effort to craft a consensus climate change bill that can pass the Senate.
"This is a very important first step and she's very eager to take the temperature of her colleagues," a committee spokesman said Monday. "We're expecting a very good turnout."
Sens. John McCain,R-Ariz., and Barack Obama,D-Ill. - who are widely seen as presidential candidates in 2008 - are expected to participate.
McCain and Obama recently introduced the Climate Stewardship Act of 2007 along with Sen. Joe Lieberman,I-Conn. Under the proposal, companies would have to reduce their emissions to 2004 levels in 2012, then gradually reduce emissions by about 2% a year through 2020.
Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman,D-N.M., is also expected to present his view on climate policy as are Sens. Dianne Feinstein,D-Calif., John Kerry,D-Mass., Carl Levin,D-Mich., Lisa Murkowski,R-Alaska, and Dick Durbin,D-Ill.
