Kerry Statement on Libby Guilty Verdict

WASHINGTON DC – Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today offered the following statement on the CIA Leak case, which reached a verdict in Washington today.

“This verdict brings accountability at last for official deception and the politics of smear and fear,” Kerry said. “This trial revealed a no-holds barred White House attack machine aimed at anyone who stood in the way of their march to war with Iraq. It is time for President Bush to live up to his own promises and hold accountable anyone else who participated in this smear. It is also well past time for Vice President Cheney, who according to the testimony was protected by Scooter Libby’s lies, to finally acknowledge his role in this sordid episode.

“I also want to thank the jury and the prosecutor for their hard work in this case.”

After the verdict, DU is out for red meat.

Kerry did not call for Cheney's head. He did not call for Bush not to pardon. So, they are unhappy, even if these calls are purely for show.

2. Sen. Kerry is calling for the Rule of Law to be respected
It is, after all, what this is about. No matter how many hotheads on DU call for 'immediate action' it remains about the Rule of Law.

The judiciary, a separate and equal branch of government, has decided that the executive has exceeded it's powers and has lied in order to cover-up for a crime. That branch of government did it's job, but only after a thorough and complete vetting of the actual merits of the case.

Anything done by Congress going forward must be equally as complete and thorough. Each branch of the government must do it's job. The job of the legislative branch is oversight and accountability. This should be done, not in a rush to judgment, but to uphold fundamantal principles of law and in support of the checks and balances on our government, that when working properly, prevent things like a rush to war. Congress moves slowly because it is an investigative branch. Some people on DU understand this. Some never will. They want quick justice that is at odds with the very idea of the Rule of Law.

4. True
I would like to see an investigation and impeachment of these warmongering crooks. They have gotten away with so much, more than most.

Thanks for the government lesson. :hi:
