I now see what you and others meant. He did a beautiful job neither defending or bashing Hillary, but staying true to the Democratic resolution. This is an interesting tug of war - where Hillary claimed what she said was consistent with the resolution (in the NYT interview) - but Kerry was clearly calling the idea of a permanent base outside that agreement. It seems that you can see in Kerry's answers that Hillary's position is different than the resolution - and as you were saying he is taken as the one who is serious here. (It's interesting to think that Kerry, out of the race, got the party to follow him, not Hillary. It's also interesting that Matthews gave him the role as the truth teller on Vietnam and then asked about Iraq.)
Kerry was great on the summary question of what was wrong on the war - tying it to things he said in 2002 and 2004. He did a nice job.
