Interesting article in the Boston Phoenix about the Boston money people
and who - and why - they are backing for 2008.

Who’s with whom
When John Kerry bowed out of the presidential sweepstakes, it freed Boston’s big Democratic brokers to find a favorite.

By DAVID S. BERNSTEIN
March 29, 2007 10:37:06 AM

For Democratic presidential candidates, Boston is the ATM kiosk on the way to New Hampshire. Massachusetts’s primary votes — few in number and late in the process — don’t mean much, but the Bay State’s deep-pocketed liberals dispense large quantities of cash that pays for the staff, offices, phone banks, and advertising necessary to win votes in Manchester and Keene, as well as in other early-voting states across the country.

Last go-round, most of the area’s big fundraisers made the easy choice to support their home-state senator John Kerry: 57 Bay Staters served as contribution “bundlers” for Kerry, including two dozen who raised $100,000 each. There were only rare exceptions — such as former DNC chair Steve Grossman, who signed on with Howard Dean...

...The early rush to declare one’s intentions has drawn criticism from some who want to see the candidates campaign for a while before declaring. “There’s this whole class of people who care more about being in the game than common sense,” says one major local funder. It was this group, or many among them, who rallied early around Attorney General Tom Reilly in the recent gubernatorial race, for instance. “They feel they have more experience and more insight, and should be the first to select a candidate. But they show worse judgment, not better, than average voters,” the funder says.

Not everyone feels that need for involvement — especially those who went all-out for Kerry last time around, such as Jack Manning, CEO of Boston Capital. Manning counts Biden, Clinton, and Dodd among his “very good friends,” says spokesperson David Gasson, but isn’t yet ready to throw himself into another presidential whirlwind. “Jack put a lot of himself into Senator Kerry’s campaign,” Gasson says. “He’s a recovering supporter.”

Others are holding off in anticipation of a sign as to whom the office holders are loyal. “If you’re a close friend of a Senator Kerry or Deval Patrick, you want to see what they do,” says Crowe...

...Clinton’s strategy has been to lock up party-insider support as early as possible. So it’s a little surprising to see that very few of Kerry’s big local-area fundraisers have signed on with her — only four of his 57 Massachusetts “bundlers” have lent their names to the host committee of her Friday fundraiser...

...But as noted above, many of Dodd’s prominent Boston-area friends have not yet committed full-tilt to help his campaign. Crowe is holding off on choosing between his good friends Biden and Dodd. O’Neill is in the same boat, choosing to aid both. “I’m in the mood to help friends,” he says. “Joe Biden’s people would like to have me to themselves, and so would Chris Dodd’s.”

...Dodd, a New Englander, Providence College grad, and lifelong Kennedy friend, probably boasts the greatest number of personal friends and acquaintances in Massachusetts among all the Democratic candidates. Many of them are sticking loyally with Dodd, at the expense of others who might have expected their support.

For that to happen, Dodd will need to prove he’s a viable candidate. If he does, more Boston power players will kick into action...

Much more...

1. They sound like us!
recovering supporters - and I am not the least surprised that people intensely loyal to Kerry aren't that keen on Hillary.

2. This is interesting from Time in Feb. regarding Kerry donors:

The most established operation in the race is also the brashest. Hillary Clinton has a cadre of dedicated fund raisers who have been with her since her husband's days in the White House. She recently made headlines by setting the audacious goal of having her top moneymakers bring in $1 million each, a mark that makes the $200,000 Bush's Rangers raised in 2004 seem quaint by comparison.

Clinton has been actively pursuing new "Hillraisers," particularly as she and Illinois Senator Barack Obama have fought to recruit what is left of John Kerry's money team. "The first time Hillary Clinton called me, I thought someone was pulling my leg," says Rob Crowe, the as-yet-undecided finance co-chair for Kerry's political-action committee. "She said, 'I know you're probably in mourning, but we'd love to get you on board.'" One less empathetic candidate called Crowe before Kerry had even finished his speech bowing out of the race.

Talk about no grace whatsoever! I wonder who called while he was giving his speech?

3. I would really like to know who the candidate was
who called before Kerry finished his speech - that would very quickly, narrow my field down even further.

4. Talking of endorsement, the word is out that McGovern (from MA)
endorsed Clinton. MA is the darling of the lefties in MA for his very consistent position against the Iraq War and for a prompt withdrawal. Does this mean that people see the writing on the wall and rush to endorse her or is there something more to that. I wished that WT2 was somewhere around to ask him why McGovern would do that, but I have not seen him for a while on DU.

6. Wow! That is a bit surprising
Hmmm, I wonder why.

I remember Jimmy last year at the Faneuil Hall rally for Deval Patrick in March. He said something like: (Paraphrasing)

People are saying Deval is too liberal to be elected statewide in Massachusetts. He's not, I am.

Curiouser and curiouser.

7. I remember that
He also had somehow injured one foot and it was in a cast. His comment on that was "It's a hard job fighting Republicans"

8. Thinking it over - could this be a quid pro quo?
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 05:37 AM by karynnj
Could McGovern have been offered a primary endorsement by the Clintons for a Senate seat in return? MA has a very late primary - so it would come from the party's last President and the steamroller nominee. With Clinton backing and the years of right wing abuse of Kerry, would he have a chance of getting the nomination? It does seem weird that this week there a large number of endorsements (Vilsack, Corzine, NOW, Billie Jean King, Ferraro ..) and it is 10 months before the first caucus/primany.

(sorry for responding twice - but something just seems odd about that endorsement.)

11. Ahm, he was asked point blank about this
by someone a while ago and McGovern has no interest in any primary but his own for his own district. That plus, he ain't no fool.

9. It seems inconsistent but politics
is politics. He must owe her team favors and/or received promises. I hope this doesn't mean the writings on the wall. I know that is the impression the Clinton team wants to project. Maybe that's why that great Apple derived video with Hillary as big brother struck a nerve.
