Ron Brownstein on JK
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 10:43 AM by whometense
From today's LA Times article, Democrats Aren't Giving Bush a Break This Term:

Kerry, the Massachusetts senator and the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, lashed Bush's record on healthcare in a speech one week after the president's second inauguration. Al Gore, the 2000 Democratic nominee, gave his first speech criticizing Bush more than one year after Bush's 2001 inauguration.

Kerry is assuming a day-to-day opposition role unprecedented for recent presidential losers. He has even conferred with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who initially led the Labor Party when it was a minority in Parliament, on how to build an opposition party.

1. This is remarkable stuff
This opposition leader stuff might just work. Brownstein has been higly critical of Kerry in the past. This is fascinating.

The part about meeting with Blair about how to be a shadoe leader is wonderful. Some of us do indeed learn.

(Plus, I am so impressed with JK's grace. He was the only one who brought Howard Dean a housewarming gift as the new guy at the Dem House in DC. So gracious and gentlemanly.)

2. He did?
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 10:45 AM by whometense
What present did he bring? I was just commenting to Ginny on another thread that I heard on AAR this morning that Gore may be running again in 2008. My reaction is UGH. But I wasn't that enthused about him in 2000. Do you think that will be a problem for dem unity if he does run again?

3. Oh, nothing gauche or chintzy
Just $1 million to get the place fixed up, get some new grassroots things planted in the Dem's garden. Very classy move.

5. hahahaha,
of course. Coffee hasn't kicked in.

That was a nice party last night. Good feel. I missed the beginning, though (full disclosure: was watching the OC with my daughter. Commence flaming.)

Was Gore in attendance?

4. Nope. But his time may have passed.
I loved the guy, but he might not be relevent anymore. Mrs. Clinton may be taking the banner of Clintonism forward. While he was a great voice last year, he has been out of the party for a long time. I think others will carry the leftish voice of the Dems forward.

6. I feel about Clinton and Gore the way I used to feel about Kerry
so I reserve judgement until I know as much about them as I do now about him.

I used to think JK had the personality of styrofoam. I'm feeling much better now.

11. I still love Gore.
I don't think he was a mere Clinton puppet. I am extremely proud of my voting record. Voted for Gore in 2000. Thank God! I only wavered two seconds when I saw a sweeeeeeeet woman wearing a Nader button. I wanted to say something nice about Nader to impress her, but then reality kicked in.

8. It takes a lot of guts to do that
I really mean that. He is braving all the naysayers who will use any public appearance as a chance to trash him and his campaign. Yet, he just keeps plugging away. (I think it was indeed, "No Surrender," as the campaign song said.) Sigh, I love that about him.

But it must be a killer to do. I imagine it must drive his daughters crazy. They were after him to take a break during last year's campaign and stop and, you know, smell the flowers or something. I think he is very focussed now on a goal and, well, that's the way it's going to be for 4 years. Wow! Gotta admire that.

9. Hilliary doesn't worry me
And neither does Gore. Hilliary is o.k. as a senator but despite what some around here say people know she is a blowhard. She is not no Bill and to many people see it that way. And oh yeah thoses polls they are bragging about are the same ones that wasn't worth a shit in the primaries,or the election, and they aren't worth a shit now. Hell look at the horseshit about * job approval ratings. One had 57% percent then another was 40 something but most of them are showing his job approval over 50%. That's pure bullshit. Hell even people that voted fore the bastard are regretting it. Who the hell are they polling people at the White House and Camp David? So as I said who gives a crap about the polls showing Hilliary ahead all people have to do is get out and they will see what most think of Hilliary.

Like JK said... According to the polls there are two million people in this room right now.

10. I sort of see it as a fixer-upper
It's like you bought this great house, nice ocean view, steps to the beach and you just fell in love with the thing. It wasn't until later that you noticed that the roof leaked a bit, the pipes were old and needed replacing and you might want to fix that crack in the foundation someday. At some point you fall out of romantic love with this house and decide to fix it once and for all. I think we may be in the 'fix it' stage.

This is a good thing. If the house is not repaired, then the damages will mount up and be an awful bear to fix later. But if you stop now, see to all the various and sundry wrongs with the place, then you might just be able to live there. It will be a place that doesn't leak, is warm and comfortable, has a nice romantic view out onto the world that is extremely attractive to company and has a rock-solid foundation that will last through any upcoming storms.

Works for me!
