4. CPU fan?
They're only about $30. Which I realize can sometimes be... only???

What kind of puter do you have, etc., etc. Have you blown it out?

5. I have a Dell Inspiron 1100
It's overheating and shutting off by itself, randomly. I'm so sad. I don't know how much it'll cost me.

6. Oh my
Most people aren't comfortable opening their laptops. I see you live in LA too. I imagine computer repair is expensive there. A fan shouldn't be too terribly much though. Labor though, I wish I could be more help!

8. Post in the computer forum
Maybe somebody lives in LA. You shouldn't have to mail it back to Dell, unless it's under an extended warranty or something.

9. I am computer illiterate
I'm going to call the guy who maintains the computers at my old job. Maybe he can help me out. The thing is, do I have to get the fan from Dell?

10. Not sure
You might be able to get one otherwise, depends on what kind of fan they used in those. My husband isn't feeling good, he laid back down a while ago. He is the one that knows about parts. Most computer guys have a slug of parts from old machines too. I bet your friend would know somebody who does. They're used, but you'd be surprised how many people buy a computer and buy a new one a year later. If you could get it done cheap enough, it might be worth a try to get another year or two out of your laptop. My husband used to have piles of that stuff, but I made him get rid of most of it. Plus, we only do computer work for friends or long-time business associates for the most part anymore. Just too many people mess up their new computer and then blame it on you. We used to sell parts and people would bring them back and say they didn't work, when what really happened is they couldn't figure out how to install them. It was a mess. So we just don't have the stockpile we used to.

I would call that guy if I were you. Not everybody opens up laptops either, but he will probably know somebody who does. How frustrating. I would die without my puter!!
