I adore the Library pic. (It's from the US News and World Report article called 'The Kerry Moment' that ran last July. Excellent, long article, btw, about how the Kerry people rocked the vote in Iowa.)

The other pic was from a Jeffrey Toobin article last July in 'The New Yorker' that focused on what the Senator had learned as a prosecutor in Middlesex County. It had lots of interesting things in it, including the story of how Kerry and his assistant had to go prowl around the docks in tough South Boston in the late '70's looking for a source who could verify a fact in a case. Oooh, love that image. (Wonder how that worked out. Even then, he was pretty noticable and would have stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb in clubby Southie. Anyway, I loved that article. It showcased a different side of Kerry than most did last year.)

He radiates kindness and warmth, and a kind of quiet strength and wisdom that makes you want to hug him and protect him, and scratch the eyes out of anyone who dares attack him.

5. Compare the body language in the second picture--

it's not like his usual body language today. There, he's more defensive and protective, with his arms pulled in and crossed. Today he is much more confident and very much the alpha-male, comfortable with taking up more "personal space". But for such a young guy to be going toe-to-toe with much older guys that way, I've got to give him a lot of credit!

8. it's too close to the Vietnam war , watergate and his congressional loss

he was angry when he got back from the war and lost trust in the government and felt betrayed. he was attacked personally by people much more older and powerful than him for telling the truth.

i do wonder if it has a lot to do with him making other people feel more at ease when he is with them. he puts his arm around them in a very friendly way and gives that smile. he takes peoples hands into his own when speaking with them. and just little personal affection type things which doesn't make him seem so powerful but more protective and caring.

he felt he was up against the world then. In a way we all did--felt up against the establishment. But he especially had been a target--being followed around by the FBI when he was only 27, just because of politics!

11. Think about this. For most of his adult life Kerry has been a target for

the vengeful type personalities.

Think of how many death threats he has had from his postVietnam days. Then he prosecuted mob members. Then he had to go and investigate and expose BushInc on IranContra and then BCCI and then the illegal wars in Central America. You think he wasn't wearing kevlar at some points?

Even in the 90s when he was advocating for gays to be allowed to serve openly in the military, there were plenty of virulently anti-gay creeps hounding him.

I always thought he was more cautious about people, not because he was aloof, but because he was always on alert for 30 plus years.

But even hear, there were so many brave posters saying Kerry didn't fight the vote because he was a coward. I just wish more of his story was really known by people. (Although knowing doesn't always help - one poster was complaining about the BCCI and Contra work because the big guys got away. )
