Mr. Favreau, then a speechwriter for Senator John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, was dispatched to interrupt Mr. Obama’s rehearsal of his convention speech to ask him to cut an overlapping line. (Mr. Favreau recalled that Mr. Obama looked at him “kind of confused — like, ‘Who is this kid?’ ”) With Mr. Obama’s election to the Senate, Mr. Favreau was hired as a member of his staff, and he has been his speechwriter ever since.
