Sen. Kerry has hip surgery to address chronic pain
Published: 8/17/09, 7:05 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) - Sen. John Kerry and his daughter Vanessa are sporting his-and-her crutches.

The Massachusetts Democrat had surgery last week on his right hip to address chronic pain and flexibility problems.

The surgery was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital and Kerry was discharged after five days.

"It's the accumulation of 65 years of hockey, lacrosse, skiing, marathon-running, just abuse and, frankly, a little bit of degeneration over that time," the senator said Monday in a telephone interview.

Kerry's daughter also had surgery to repair nerve damage on the bottom of her left foot. Kerry spokeswoman Brigid O'Rourke said Vanessa, a doctor and third-year resident, is getting married this fall "and wanted to be able to dance at her wedding."

The two used their crutches Monday to enter a swearing-in ceremony for Kerry's former brother-in-law, David Thorne, as the new U.S. ambassador to Italy. He is the brother of Kerry's ex-wife and Vanessa's mother, the late Julia Thorne.

The usually clean-shaven Kerry sported a beard for the ceremony, but he said it's only temporary during his recovery.

"My wife doesn't want me standing at the sink, shaving," he said.

Gov. Deval Patrick is having hip surgery at Mass General on Sept. 1. The state's senior senator, Edward M. Kennedy, was initially treated there for his brain cancer. He is now convalescing at his home on Cape Cod.

2. Not until I logged in here. Thanks
I hope he and Vanessa are both fully recovered soon. I wonder if this means he will not be going to Afghanistan.

7. Very professorial
Gotta admit, if it was allowed to fill in, it might be a fine look for him. Wonder if THK likes it?

10. Well, from my own experience with my husband, beards can be very scratchy.
Still though, it is a new look for him and he does wear it well.

8. It is interesting how many really liked it - I wonder if a post saying Kerry's got a beard would get
more attention. He does look distinguished. The photo with Vanessa is great.

9. No, I didn't thanks a lot for letting me know.
It is hard to admit, but I guess the senator is getting older like the rest of us. He still is in great shape though, and I love the re-cooperation beard. I hope he heals quickly- we need him in the senate doing our work.

Hip surgery - :-(. And what about Deval Patrick? He is much younger, isn't he? An epidemy of hip problems in MA?

13. LOL, no, just August
This is a good time for all those folks to get these persistent, but not critical, health care issues taken care of while they have the time. Deval has a campaign to run next year, the Senator is due on Afghanistan tomorrow and his daughter is getting married soon. So, August was a good time for getting patched up.

14. Even knowing the Senator is tough, I can't believe he is going on that trip
Though I assume he would follow whatever directions his doctors give him.

15. A Boston Globe celebrity page doesn't seem to like the beard, but has some details
of when he was in the hospital and that he had hip replacement surgery.

"Kerry recovering
Between the beard and the crutches, Senator John Kerry is looking a little worse for wear these days. Kerry is hobbling after undergoing hip replacement surgery. The senator's spokeswoman, Brigid O'Rourke, said Kerry was admitted to Mass. General Hospital on Aug. 10 and released on the 14th. The surgery on his right hip is intended to address chronic pain and flexibility problems. And what about that beard?"

16. I did not know that.
Wishing both JK and Vanessa speedy recoveries!

My cousin recently flew from Miami to Boston to have surgery for the same reason Vanessa had to have it. Odd.

As for the beard - I like it. Would love to see another photo of him when it fills out a bit.

18. I hadn't heard about this!
Sounds painful. :( Though I'm sure that once it takes full effect, he will feel much better. Looks like he is making a really good recovery, which I am glad to see.

I think the Senator is a very handsome man regardless, but the beard is a really good look for him indeed! :P And I think it's really cute that he and Vanessa are sporting "his and her crutches". Just shows how close they seem to be! :loveya:

I wish them both a full and speedy recovery! :)
