Some thoughts on the funeral mass
I saw much of it as Teddy's last statement on who he is and what he stands for. If my understanding is correct, he planned much of the content, readings, etc. himself. The priest's commentary on social justice, and especially the succession of the young ones quoting Teddy's words... it was like Teddy speaking to everybody from the other side, a last entreaty to keep fighting on. Unvelievable.

Also, I think I fell in love with Vicky. I knew close to nothing about her until these last few days, barely familiar even with what she looks like. I was moved by the expression of deep sadness borne with grace and deep acceptance whenever the camera stopped on her. A very beautful woman. I was also impressed by Patrick K. Given his personal problems, I think that what he said and the way he said it was a small act of personal heroism.

1. Vicki is the best
Ask MBS for a great Vicki story from the Harvard event last fall. She can attest to Vicki's warmth and caring.

3. I have never met Vicki in person, but
Edited on Sun Aug-30-09 12:28 PM by MBS
(goes to show you how bizarre internet connections can be), I've corresponded with her a few times by way of common membership on a particular listserve. The fact that she even participates in that listserve, and answers emails sent through that listserve, speaks volumes about her all by itself.(By the way, the wit and insight of her listserv comments also provide proof positive that this is one very sharp, savvy woman). Anyway, through that slender electronic connection, I happened to write her that I was crossing my fingers that I could "win" the Harvard lottery, and get myself into the event, so what did she do? arrange to get me a "VIP" ticket!!!! Since, in fact, I did NOT win the lottery, this kindness on her part made ALL the difference in my ability to be there that day (not to mention the fact that it got me a seat near the front). And I STILL have not met her in person!!!!

If someone like me gets this bon-bon of kindness, imagine what she's done for people she does know. . From an outsider's perspective, my guess is that Vicki Kennedy is perhaps the best thing that could have happened to the life of Edward Moore Kennedy. And there seemed to be such real happiness between them. . inspirational and heartening to behold.

Yup, she's a class act.

6. Thanks for the story MBS
Yes, in as much as can be judged from afar, they seemed to be really happy and loving. One of the clips that I saw over and over these last days, last year at the convention, the quick kiss on the lips she gave him on the lips before he started talking, so lovely and bittersweet....

4. beautiful, and dignified, but a surprisingly conservative liturgy
even for the Catholic Church. Other than the use of English language, and the personal (and very moving) eulogies by the sons, the hymns and liturgy were more 1959 than 2009. Most interesting that this seemed to be their explicit wish.

5. I know nothing about
modern vs. conservative liturgies. One of the things I liked a lot though was the emphasis in the homily (is this the right term?), the what you do the least of us is what you do to me part. That's what Teddy was all about.
