‘I am proud today to endorse my friend and former colleague Setti Warren for mayor of Newton,’’ Kerry said in an e-mailed statement released by his office. ‘‘In the nearly six years we spent together, I saw directly Setti Warren’s leadership skill, his ability to work with diverse groups to bring about important improvements in real peoples’ lives and his integrity and commitment to public service.’’
Warren was Kerry’s national trip adviser during the 2004 presidential campaign and was his deputy state director and press secretary. In that capacity, he was the senator’s point person for small business and economic development, Kerry’s e-mail said.
‘‘He understands the tough issues facing Newton and our state today,” Kerry said. “Setti Warren will lead the charge to get Newton’s financial house in order, strengthen the city’s school system to prepare our children for the new economy, address the city’s crumbling infrastructure, change the tone of the city’s public discourse, and work to ensure a better quality of life for the constituents of the Newton. Newton needs experience, his commitment and his progressive leadership.’’
Warren was quoted in the e-mail from Kerry’s office as saying: “I am deeply honored to count Senator Kerry among my closest friends and strongest supporters. His lifetime of public service has been an inspiration to me and his commitment to and advocacy on behalf of the working families of Massachusetts is unparalleled. I look forward to bringing the strength of our relationship to the people of Newton.”
