Halifax - Rep. Tom Calter, D-Kingston, will not support a request by the late senator to consider a bill allowing Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint an interim senator until a new senator is elected in January.
“I understand the argument that we need a temporary placeholder, there is a seat available and we need two voices in the senate engaging in the health care debate. I get that,” Calter said. “But with all due respect to the late senator, we’ve been without two voices in the Senate for almost 15 months.”
and
“In the past couple of days I reached this place. I know there is so much more to do with the federal government. We need a health care policy. We need an immigration policy, we need an education policy, and climate control policy, and we need both senators to actively engage in this debate. For those reasons it was a very difficult decision.”
