OT - a note about TayTay's mother
Since she posted in this thread, I'll go ahead and move it out here. I know we will all want to send her our thoughts and/or prayers. (And congrats on the new job)

3. Oh, I love you guys
Ever the New Englander, I didn't want to "make a big deal" about myself. I probably should have done a thread on this to explain my absences to come. It just feels funny to do that. (Ah, okay, I so get that "reserved" comment about New Englanders. I have my "reserved" moments too!)

Thanks! We are going through the initial stage of the stroke diagnosis. My Mom is in good hands and all that can be done is being done. So, we wait on God's time to see how it goes. There are some good signs for recovery, so I am hopeful.

Thanks again. I can feel the hugs you know. They are warmly welcome and shared.

8. Update, today was a really good day
My Mom was one of the lucky ones who got the TPA medicine within the 3 hour window after a stroke. She is making just remarkable progress. Much, much better today than yesterday. I think she will be out of the Intensive Care Unit tomorrow AM and might be moved to a Rehab hospital sometime next week. And the doctor said that a near full recovery is not an unrealistic expectation.

We are taking it slow. But signs are good. I think it's all those prayers and good wishes that flooded over us. I really do. Thank you so much for that. I love you back.

21. Doing better
But it has been really busy. Sorry I haven't posted in a while.
I think things will get more smooth soon, I hope.

My Mom has been moved to a Rehab hospital that is doing a wonderful job. She is making the slow but steady progress needed and we are very hopeful on her recovery.

Again, thanks for all the good wishes.

26. Update: The last week
The news is gray. My mother was in the Rehab Hospital and doing well when she had another major stroke. This, eventually, got her transferred back to the acute care hospital. This means she has had 3 strokes, 2 major, in 10 days. That is not a good thing.

Her doctor has asked us, 3 times, if we have a DNR (Do Not Resusitate) in place. This is because she is at a crossroads right now. My Mom might get better, but, she might also have but one more stroke and that would be a very bad thing. Right now, she is still "her" in the sense that she knows all of her family, can understand and try and particpate in conversations and so forth. This is, whatever happens going forward, a comfort and gift to family. The rest is in "God's time." I am taking this by the moment, by the hour, by the day. (This is life, after all, in all it's bounty and sorrow.)

I come from a huge family. (I joke sometimes that I am related to half the east coast. That is only half a joke, I think I am related to half of New England.) This is a blessing, of course, as I have strong people around me with that never-ending sense of Irish humor that both uplifts and cuts at the same time. (Ah, did you see Teddy Kennedy's wake? Yeah, ah, sooooo reminded me of my family. You cry a little, you laugh a lot, you wipe a tear and nurse a smile at the same time.) The downside of having a huge family is telling bad news over and over. It wears on ya. I thank God I have this group here were I can go and talk about "other things" for a while and basically have the time and space to "get a grip" on what is going on. While it may seem odd to others that I would come to a political site for some comfort and ease, it works for me. (God, I am so Irish sometimes.)

Anyway, that is what is going on. We abide. Life, for now, goes on. We shall see what the future holds.

Oh, and I cannot even begin to tell you how angry I am at the Sarah Palin's of the world. To reduce the drama of making sure a DNR is in place for the comfort and well-being of all is a wrenching drama. (And a necessary one. It has it's peaceful side too.) Reducing that painful incident to "death panels" is so insulting and inhuman that I don't think I can forgive those who did it. And my own personal case was not as painful as it would be for those facing this decision in younger patients. I need to write about that soon. I need to vent that particular poison from my system. How dare they call this process, a "death panel." friggin bastids. That insight is going to stay with me, it is a take-away from this whole time of my life.

a big, big . What else can I say? There are times when I wish I were Irish, Jewish does not work that well for me in moments like this... ANother , and I could not agree more about the "friggin bastids". Idiotic, selfish, narrow-minded assholes.

29. Sending prayers and hugs for your mom and you and your family
I am still hoping for a recovery, but no matter what happens you are lucky to be in such a big, loving family and I agree that you are a wonderful daughter!

And I agree with what you say about the hideous cruelty of using this kind of pain to make a political point, and a stupid one, at that!

Edited on Fri Oct-23-09 12:47 PM by YvonneCa
...very challenging and emotional. One has to find support where one can...and if venting here or elsewhere helps, do it. My dad passed away two years ago...not from a stroke, but the DNR was still an issue (along with a lot of other things). It truly is a blessing that the person of your mom is still with you and your family. Hold on to that. We were lucky to have my dad there...lucid and loving...the whole time. It is a blessing. I'll continue to hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I hope things turn around for your Mom in the next weeks.

This is so hard. Fingers crossed that your mom will still stay with you for a good long time yet. I'm so glad your mom is still "her", and that you have the support of your large loving family. Those at least are blessings.
