WASHINGTON -- The White House announced this afternoon the nomination of heiress, philanthropist and senatorial spouse Teresa Heinz to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
First lady Michelle Obama serves as honorary chair of the committee, which promotes the White House's goals through the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It was founded by President Ronald Reagan in 1982.
Ms. Heinz, of Fox Chapel, is chair of the Heinz Endowments and the Heinz Family Philanthropies.
Ms. Heinz is the wife of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who ran for president in 2004. During the G-20, she hosted a dinner for the political spouses at her farm.
Ms. Heinz was one of 25 private citizen nominees to the committee announced this afternoon. They will join co-chairs George Stevens Jr. -- a writer, producer and director of television and film -- and theater producer Margo Lion, vice chair Mary Schmidt Campbell, the dean of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and 12 ex-officio members representing government agencies.
Among the 25 nominees announced today are cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine Anna Wintour and actress Sarah Jessica Parker, of "Sex and the City" fame.
Wonderful.
