A little break-- Herbie, Maine elm tree, cut down today
Link to slide show and good pictures-- especially the one of Frank Knight placing his hand comfortingly on Herbie's trunk

NPR report

CBS News report

The Herbie Project tree trust from Yarmouth Community Services, with video, T-shirts, and information about wood products to be made from Herbie. Probably the most thorough site I have found on Herbie.

The T-shirts are printed with the following advice from Herbie:

Stand tall and proud.
Sink your roots into the earth.
Be content with your natural beauty.
Go out on a limb.
Drink plenty of water.
Remember your roots.
Enjoy the view.

I'm sorry I never got the chance to go to Maine and see Herbie in his lifetime, but at least I got to know about him, and to learn about the rich and poignant history of the American elm.

:loveya:

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Martha Coakley GOTV efforts.

:fistbump:
