Who Says Republicans Don't Have Great Ideas?

...before I've even settled into my new job, the political machine in Massachusetts is looking for someone to run against me. And you're not going to believe who they are supposedly trying to recruit--liberal MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow.

Alas, like so many things that Republicans do and say, this one is completely unhinged from reality.

1. They are unhinged - even on leftwing blogs, no one mentions Maddow

The BG mentioned Elizabeth Warren, but she would be harder to demonize.

Given that Brown has a huge amount of money left from 2010, supposedly giving him more money than anyone else in the MA delegation, it does seem unseemly that he is soliciting money. I know people here would have been furious if someone was trying to get 2008 money before the 2006 election. This likely means he either sees his ability to raise money will decline or he really is going to try for President in 2012.

2. OMG! The MA Dems are going to insist on an election

Scott Brown believes he has already had a coronation and well, the nerve of those little people trying to impose democracy on him. (Him! I mean really, he has already had a whole sketch on Saturday Night Live done just on him and his sexy-ability. Didn't anyone at the MA Dems see the Barn Coat of Invincibility? The Pickup Truck of Doom?

Honestly, the nerve of those people, thinking they can run Democrats, liberals even, against the godling Brown. How utterly common of them.

Seriously, this guy was lucky. He has some factors in his favor, to be sure, including the ability to lie with a straight face and the appearance of sincerity, which is a big plus in politics. But he is also unable to think on his feet and can't make up his mind without a poll to fall back on. Hell yeah, we are going to take him on.

And the new Holy One coughed up some confusion to the BG the other day:

"WASHINGTON — As his fellow Republicans girded to oppose health care legislation in the Senate this week and readied a nationwide repeal effort, Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown said yesterday that he was not ready to join those efforts and was keeping his options open.

By last night, Brown had clarified his position, promising to vote against the Democrats’ health care reconciliation package and pledging to support GOP repeal efforts. He said his earlier remarks were mischaracterized.

“I’m going to repeal it because it’s bad for our state,’’ Brown declared last night in a phone interview.

It was a surprising stutter-step for the former state lawmaker, who vaulted into the US Senate and became a national GOP phenomenon precisely because of his strong attacks on President Obama’s health care proposals. Unwavering opposition to the legislation has been a centerpiece of his political repertoire."

The Holy One obviously didn't check with his handlers before he spoke. Why he sounded like a ahm, OMG say it isn't so, a, a, a, waffler. Oh no!

Apparently, Brown did not deliver a single handed blown to the Healthcare bill.

6. He is the 100th member of the US Senate

and a guy with terrible committee assignments, relative to his home state, and someone who has used up his 15 minutes of fame. Oh and he's also a poser, a fake.

Now he has to be the very, very, very junior Senator from MA. He also has to navigate a minefield in order to get re-elected in 2012.

7. But to add a dash of realism here, I do think he can pull it off,

if he plays his cards right. Mass. Dems ought to lose the entitlement attitude that led to this mess in the first place, and run a Man/Woman of the People with populist liberal bona fides. This person should be in contrast to Kerry who is the wonky aristocratic guy, a statesman for sure, but ... Mass. needs someone to balance the Senate delegation out -- a Yin/Yang thing. Brown seemed more like that person than Coakley, but I think Mass. Dems can find someone much, much better up for the battle. I also hope there is a spirited Dem primary in Mass. to toughen everyone up. I think Coakley glided by too easily.

Still, don't underestimate the American Idol effect. Brown's daughter was in the contest, and people love that show and identified with that. So it will be tough BUT if Brown keeps making mistakes, easier than it would have been a few weeks ago.

9. Oh agreed on that. We have to actually run a race

BUT, it is going to be very difficult for Brown to re-run. He won't have the special election background and will have to run in a Presidential election year in which he is one of hundreds running for re-election. It is also very likely that, as in past years, the anger that propelled him into office will have dissipated or gone into other causes.

Brown also has a much smaller base than you think. Brown has also over-promised what constituency he has and now has to decide which constituencies to piss off by failing to produce for them. He has to balance the independents who want something done with the Teabaggers who don't want anything done. He has to run as a pro-life and pro-choice guy who supports and opposes gay rights. He has to run as someone who wants to repeal health reform because it works well in MA.

This guy worked a particular vein of magic to get elected. You get to do that once. Now he is part of the establishment and has to run on a record of more than, "well, I couldn't stop it." Remember, this was a one-trick pony and now he is going to be against a united party in a big election, not a special.

Brown crapped out on his committee assignments. He is on Armed Forces, which is good fit for MA with all out research and Defense facilities. But he is also on Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs which is overbalanced on the side of military issues. He has NO ability to sweeten the pot by sending back money on education, hospitals, environmental concerns and so forth. Brown is in a box of his own making. What he actually gets for MA in terms of money and contracts is totally dependent on John Kerry and the MA Dem delegation giving him some handouts. That is not going to happen.

I like our chances here, I really do. Scott Brown is a "poser," someone who pretends to be something he is not. There is nothing worse to call someone in MA. Might as well call him a Yankees fan.

8. What does he plan to run on?

He seems to think his election to the Senate was a ticket to permanent American Idol status---book deal, challenging Obama to a basketball game, media interviews. Does he plan on actually accomplishing anything relevant to the job of a Senator?
