You know whats funny, I heard a person say one time Kerry had no support among young folk until Dean dropped out yet there's a few of us of college age here, and some of my best friends on the boards around my age were supportive of Kerry over Dean in the primaries.

I'm a 20 year old sophomore at the University of Illinois and a member of College Dems. It pisses me off when the pundits posited that Kerry had no enthusiastic youth support, that everyone my age went for Dean. Now I'll admit rooting for Dean in the primaries, but once I did my homework and learned all about John Kerry, I became a far bigger fan of his than I ever was of Dean. John Kerry is the first political figure I can honestly say I love. But, obviously I don't count, since the talking heads would rather pretend that everyone who voted for Kerry was simply ABB and actually hated him. :grr:

Ive talked to some of the others around our age range, 16-22 and a good amount of them seemed to generally like Kerry. Honestly, I never was a fan of Dean, he was too economically conservative for me and well I wasn't big on his style honest.

15. Kerry actually did win the young voters in the Primary also

in the general election, voters under 30 went for Kerry by over 60 percent.

in the primary Kerry did well among traditional Democrats such as women, minorities, union members, and young people.

Edwards did well among conservative leaning voters including Republicans. the wisconsin primary turned out close because it was an open primary and the republicans and conservative independents ended up voting for Edwards.it's one of the reasons Kerry picked Edwards to be vp.

Kerry won among the anti Iraq and younger voters in the Iowa caucuses yet I saw what I believed was an outrageous claim that Kerry had no support of the young until Dean dropped out, but thats such crap honestly, and to be honest, Kerry had a more younger element running his campaing as far as I knew, David Wade is Kerry's campaign spokesman right? he seemed like a relatively young guy from what I heard and Stephanie Cutler, most of Dean's top campaign brass were more middle aged like Kate O'Connor, Trippi, etc. It ain't no diss but honest to god, to say that Dean was practically the only one getting the youth was bullcrap to me.

because I'm 52. I do think I "think young" because I finished college between 1995 and 1999. English major. I have a husband and three kids aged 22, 25, and 30. The oldest two are married.

Maybe the most interesting thing about me, to this forum, is that I voted Republican (unthinkingly,just out of family tradition) but then voted for Clinton twice (just a gut feeling that he was better), and then Gore. Going to college in mid-life solidified my belief in the Democratic Party's thinking--now I know why I vote Democratic!
I got really interested in politics after 9/11, and got even more infuriated about Bush and the fact that Gore got cheated. Waited four long years to oust Bushieboy, and became an ARDENT Kerrycrat during the campaign! I worked as a volunteer through September and October.
I am an "outcast" in my original family because of my political beliefs (they are ALL from the religious right, and some of them say they question my sanity) but my husband, kids and their spouses all went for Kerry. So I'm happy. And Wisconsin went BLUE, by only 14,000 votes, so we felt our hard work paid off!

My husband just finished college in Oct at age 41 and is starting a whole new career after 20 years as a mechanic! He can finally work in a nice warm office instead of an ice cold or burning hot garage. We are very proud of him!

Luckily the ONLY outcasts in my family is my inexplicable uncle, who thinks he's a redneck because he likes Jeff Foxworthy, and his wife. Funny thing is that side of the family is descended from Oliver Ellsworth, who was one of the original 5 framers of the Constitution, some say he was the one that offered up the name "united states", and he was 3rd supreme court justice of the US. He was a Republican, back when that word stood for patriotism and love of country! Unfortunately, he was also the guy that wrote the 3/5 th's part of the Constitution regarding slaves. I guess no one's perfect! I liked Reagan, but wasn't old enough to vote for him and by his second term, no longer felt he was what he originally represented. I still think, however that he represents the "last of the good guys" in the Republican party.

Age is just a number, and people are living longer and with more energy later in life! Especially the boomers--just look at John Kerry. (But then we have Cheney, who is only two years older! Seems like 15!)

Your body and brain will both last as long as you use them wisely.

64! Your post is interesting. I know "your" problem...you got educated. So did I and I'm the "outcast" more or less until they need someone to do their brain work for them. Used to be more of that than now.

Married for 18 years to second husband. No children except the couple of thousand that I taught. :-) Taught school for 32 years. I retired when you were still in getting educated :-) in 96! I'm proud of your staying in there to get your education.


I've always liked John Kerry; and no, I wasn't into politics when he was demonstrating against the war in Vietnam. Wish I had been because I would have agreed with his stand on it. Saw him back in mid 90s...I guess...and thought he was articulate and practical and sensible. Thought he was miles above the run of the mill pol and I still do! I'd vote for him again in a New York minute...however long that is! :-)

I'm glad to see all the "youngsters" on here. Keep learning, and in honor of J.Jackson..."Keep hope alive"!

And I have two teenage kids. I have a daughter 16 and she will turn 17 in March and a son who turned 15 in Aug. And yes I was young when I got married and had kids but the bright side of it is I'm still young when my kids are grown and I seem to be able to understand my kids more and get into there music, clothing styles, ect. And what is funny is when me and we go out places is how people that know my daughter will say I didn't know had a sister. We are always being mistaken for her sisters and my daughter has to speak up and say NO! This is my mom not my sister.

But I will say it wasn't easy being so young having to kids to raise and it put a halt to me being able to do alot of things that young people get to do. But I'm proud of my kids they are good, smart kids and my daughter plans on getting into public service. She is also addicted to politics and a huge Kerry supporter. As soon as she graduates we are moving to Mass. for her to go to college.

Well, my mom's a Cancer, and she loves John too (just not as much as me). Her b-day is July 12. I'm really sorry that Shrub shares your birthday - seeing his monkey face probably does put a damper on things.

My family has always been Democrat, but southern Conservative probably because of the military aspect. Dad was Navy, brother was Army, Sister was Air Force, Brother in law was Navy, other brother in law was Air Force, Mom married Navy, other sister married Navy.

And here I am, the little hippy holdout without any military connection whatsoever.

And here I also am, supporting a hawk who used to be a dove. How odd when you think about it.

did you travel ok? My sister was stuck on a highway entrance ramp somewhere in rural Ohio yesterday for hours. She (and all the other cars stuck there) finally got re-routed. She had come for a visit home (western New York) but was trying to make it back to Illinois to spend Christmas with her husband. I think she might get there today.

I'm only 5 years behind you, and in the same place with the election. But, I guess I am a late bloomer. I did the thing up right. 5 years ago I would not discuss politics--period. This past year I went wild. And pulled out the stops doing the door to door thing, changed my "no party" registration to Dem. joined the ACLU, etc. I guess when I finally decided to get active I made up for lost time. It was John Kerry that influenced me. There is something you just have to love and trust about him.

36. I think 9/11 woke a lot of us up

and we started paying attention to the news and what the heck America was doing in the world. Then came Afghanistan, and then they started beating the drums about Iraq. From Sept. 2002 on, it was all about how Iraq was going to "get" us next. Then they got their war, and it blew up in their faces, the incompetents!! But they keep lying about it, and half of America believes we are still the good guys.

So for me, I think it was 9/11 and then Bush's Iraq invasion that got me into politics. And then this marvelous Democratic candidate appeared and rose to the lead over nine other ones. We had someone who could fix things, who had an alternative world view and could rescue our sorry reputation before our former allies. Someone who actually put love of the nation before corporatism and useless ideology. Someone who never smirks!! So we all had a picture of America getting better next year--so close we could taste it! But the criminal wing of the GOP has so far prevented the will of the people from being heard. They committed fraud (exit polls are never that wrong!) and lied to the people to make Bush's re-election sound plausible (values! values!) The mainstream media was their echo chamber.

The people will be heard; we will rise again. Just as Nixon went down, so will this bunch. They have had far too much hubris, and we've got lots of good people in high places fighting for us, and with our grassroots support they will succeed!

Wow, I didn't mean to write a sermon--well I guess this is my Xmas message of hope to us all. Merry Christmas/Seasons Greetings to everyone!

I started getting...well, verbal about everything after Bush got elected the first time. Maybe I should say, after he stole the election the first time. It was JK that made me act on my beliefs, though. Your "sermon" is great. I love hearing that. Most of the time I really feel that way. Sometimes, even the most optimistic of us get in the dumps, though. Your message is wonderful, and appreciated. You are right. Good will prevail.

38. Never made it out

I got to the airport by 1pm, got myself checked in, then bummed around and watched the departure board. Mine was the only flight into Cinn. not cancelled. So I went to the gate and waited some more. We got delayed. We got delayed again. And again. And again. Our departure time was 6:45 pm before they finally cancelled the flight. Apparently they ran out of de-icer, and the truck bringing more got stuck. Eh Merry Xmas.

52. Finally made it out on Xmas eve

Crazy trip. On the 23rd, my Delta flight got backed up 4 times then cancelled. I was booked on the same flight number the next day at the same time, but when I got up there, it had been cancelled too. They separated us into "going to Cincinatti to visit" and "layover on the way to somewhere else" people. We "going to Cincinatti" were booked on a charter flight through American Airlines on a plane with no bathroom. We cheered when we landed.

On Xmas Day, I was over at the family's house, and looking at their internet to make sure my flight was happening. I looked, then clicked on something else, then returned to the Delta site. In those few minutes, the flight was cancelled. I couldn't believe it. Turns out it was a Comair flight, and all of them were cancelled. So I spent 2 hours getting a new flight through Delta itself. Finally made it home around 5 pm today.

All in all, it wasn't so bad. I met people along the way, and still got to spend time with family. I'll have to go visit again when they're not in the middle of blizzard cleanup.

I met someone at an xmas party the other day who is a photographer and took pictures at all the primary rallies here in Denver. He had some interesting things to say about the makeup of the people at those rallies.

The most balanced audience age wise was the Kerry rally, with people from all age groups attending.

I thought that was kind of interesting.

I was 13 when JFK was killed. 18 when they got RFK and MLK, Jr. 19 when I went to jail for the first time for protesting Nam. 24 when we finally nailed Nixon. 32 for Clinton's first ride. 41 when I stood at the still smoldering site of the WTC. 54 when I finally "got" Kerry. It was the big Phillie rally. I thought: damn, that man really knows what's going down. Love that guy. And apparently the majority of the country does, too. Now, we just have to prove it!
