All I can say is that I can't believe that Kerry has the dedication to things he knows have to be done to do this.

6. Fortunately, the two segments were completely disjoint

Pickens was on first and was in their studio, speaking just of his Pickens plan, which is converting heavy duty trucks to natural gas. He claims that this would reduce the need for oil by an amount equal to about half of what we import from OPEC - and it is 33% cleaner. He did say there was a $65,000 charge to convert a truck. He wants at least a big chunk of that from Congress - and says he is working with Reid. He made absolutely no mention of Kerry. His segment ended weirdly - mid sentence where they went to a commercial. They returned to have the young guy (don't remember name) whospoke of Tiger Wood's twitter - which was completely boring.

Next, Jeffery Sacks was asked about Pickens - he said that natural gas is part - a small part of the solution. It is not clean enough for the long term. Said no one has a plan. (The first comment good as it put Pickens part in perspective. The second rather weird.)

Then Kerry - first - said Sacks was a friend - but said they did work very hard last year and defended that he had a plan - and they still have a plan. Spoke of need for grid to move energy around. (JS said that Pickens, high speed rail etc could be sold as transforming the economy - isn't that a sellable iea. Kerry - "you would hope so" - mentioned that many Republicans there just to cut things. Kerry spoke of the potential market and how China etc are ahead of us.

JS - Whoever controls the next wave of energy will get huge economic gains. Sacks - said he agree with everything Kerry said - but "you need to get rid of cap and trade." Kerry, cap and trade is not there any more - though it was the best way to encourage the change needed. Sacks calls for a carbon tax instead that he said that it would have popular support(LOL what planet is he on) if it is gradually raised. Kerry - the Republicans have raised calling everything a tax to an art form. Kerry did say that he has and will look seriously at any way to put a cost on carbon. (Note from me - I guess Sacks missed the outrage when a cost for the transportation segment was rumored earlier this year.)

Kerry spoke of his infrastructure bank to help invest in innovation. Barnicle (?) said Kerry's iead common sense and asked why he didn't take it to the country - said country likes common sense, Congress dominated by ideology. Kerry said he intends to do that - will be making a speech.

Asked of the Start treaty, said he was leaving to go to meeting at the WH after this - also meeting with McCain and Kyl later today. Asked when he would talk to Kyl - said he had never stopped talking to Kyl. Said Kyle's issue is modernization and Obama has agreed to more than W did. Then said that this is important for national security.

Asked about Afghanistan - asked if he would push harder to get out. Said that the plan is to move to get out. Kerry spoke of having 14 hearings. Very rushed - as both they and JK had to go - said they want him back for 20 minutes or so just on Afghanistan - to which he said yes.

12. Realized I created an ambiguous reference - JS is Joe S, not Jeffery Sacks

Important as he really picked up some of what have been Kerry's long time points - that if we don't get in we will miss the economic gains of leading on this and that it would transform the economy.

Sacks, seemed to agree wholeheartedly with all Kerry's idea - with the very notable exception that he is completely against a cap and trade market - and strongly advocated for a carbon tax. (This is the same position I have seen from many on the left who really are concerned with the possible dangers of market manipulation. Kerry's reluctance on it just being a straightforward carbon tax has always been that it would never pass.)

17. What is funny is that I do look nearly every day for Kerry stuff - and this never came up

It only came up when I used a more detailed "google" story to get the name of the Kerry staffer who level - to see if I could find a likely candidate for the mysterious "Carol".

I am so happy that I found it because Kerry was incredible. The frustrating thing was Joe Scarborough was completely oblivious that everything Kerry said here - at least in concept in 2004. (I recognize some of the lines!) It was also good to rehear his discussion with Sacks on C&T vs a slowly increasing carbon tax. Kerry completely owned him - Kerry is obviously right on the politics. Kerry is also completely right that a gradual change will NOT cause transformation. Also, the money IS needed now - to give tech companies a push to invest in the needed technology.

Watching it - I couldn't help but think that Kerry was the real chance for a transformational President - even more than Obama. It makes me wonder if that obvious fact was not the real reason that so many powerful interests were more against him in 2004, than against Obama in 2008. It may be that the people who least need change and most fear change are those benefiting most from the status quo. Obama talked change, but he was never as explicit as Kerry was on the entire energy/environment issue. That type of change creates winners and losers - and I think the obvious losers struck as hard as they could.

Kerry was very diplomatic on Kyl. It would be fun to get an off the record answer as to whether it is easier to deal with Kyl or the Sudanese!

..as always. So eloquently on point and effective! :) I especially loved how he said the GOP "has made an art form out of calling everything a tax increase" (to paraphrase). So true! I'm also really excited to hear him say that he's taking his role in the discussion about climate leglislation out on the road. I think this is a fantastic idea and JK is just the person to help get the point more broadly across!

He's more optimistic than I am in regard to convincing Kyl to come around on START (or most anything else), but I admire JK's resolve. He's nothing if not determined! So proud to call him my Senator. As a former AZ resident (who prior to this year had Kyl for a Senator), I got one hell of an upgrade in JK! :D
