Curtis joined the Army in September 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2009. He is survived by his wife, Samantha Curtis, and 8-month-old daughter, Tessa-Marie A. Curtis, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; father, Philip C. Curtis, of Belmont, Mass.; and mother, Pamela Curtis, of Cambridge, Mass.
"The saddest (part is that) his beautiful, 8-month-old daughter will never get to know her father," said a woman speaking at the memorial.
Among those in attendance at Curtis' memorial service was Gov. Deval Patrick, U.S. Rep. Ed Markey and Sen. John Kerry.
"We all yearn for the day we can get those troops home and put this behind us," said Kerry, "but we'll never forget what he did for this country."
