Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), a prominent Jewish congressman, said the Jewish vote is a concern for his party.

“I think Jewish voters will be Democratic and be for Obama in 2012, especially if you get a Republican candidate like Gov. Perry,” he said. “But there’s no question the Jewish community is much more bipartisan than it has been in previous years. There are Jews who are trending toward the Republican Party, some of it because of their misunderstanding of Obama’s policies in the Middle East, and some of it, quite frankly, for economic reasons. They feel they want to protect their wealth, which is why a lot of well-off voters vote for Republicans.”

Now, you could discuss whether Waxman is correct in his analysis, you could even argue that it is biased because it implies that some jewish voters put their loyalty to Israel before their loyalty to the US (even if this would be weak). It also does not surprise me that far right papers are going to yell about stereotyping (even if Waxman is Jewish), because they cannot accept the argument of class warfare (that some rich voters put their own short term economical interest before the better good.

But it is hard for me to get why the Globe went there with this editorial:

It seems obvious that Waxman was saying that voters sometimes pursue their economical interest, and not that Jewish people are all rich and only interested in their own interest?

I am going to ask my husband what he thinks, because I may be missing something that Jewish people will see, but I am curious about what you think.
