1. That is pretty interesting
and it does show why Kerry and Kyl had such different descriptions - Kyl was noticeably absent from any of the bipartisan subgroups that actually did try to get a compromise, while Kerry threw his heart and soul into it.

That Kerry had the political courage to try to revamp the Toomey idea to actually work is amazing. It also makes sense as there are Kerry calls for tax reform (eliminating loopholes and then lowering rates) that go back years - the problem with Toomey's is that he lowers the rates low enough to eat all the likely recovered revenue. Then again, the Toomey plan - as many have said - was more conceptual than detailed. Then he added making the Bush tax cuts permanent.

It seems that Kerry was 100% right about not leaking - the leaks killed any chance. I wonder if there were no leaks, whether the Toomey plan could have been revamped to NOT give another tax cut to the wealthy - instead having that money go to deficit reduction or stimulus. It seems that the seeds of a solution really do lie with eliminating the loopholes - and doing so will call unemployment to rise in the one profession where it will be a good thing - lobbyists.

I suspect that this will lead to Kerry being slammed on DU and DK, but I see it as Kerry really doing exactly what he spoke of on MTP - while David Gregory looked on skeptically. He may have been the best intentioned person there.
