Kerry raps Bush on elderly

<NEW BEDFORD -- Sen. John F. Kerry blasted President Bush's commitment to seniors yesterday in advance of the Massachusetts Democrat's visit to SouthCoast today.

Sen. Kerry will conduct a "town hall" meeting to discuss seniors' issues and the Bush administration, which he calls "the great misrepresenter."

"I don't think this administration is doing anything positive for seniors," the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee told The Standard-Times. From Social Security to Medicare drug benefits to bankruptcy overhaul, he said the Bush White House is working against the interests of average seniors.

The senator will host the meeting, which is open to the public, at 10:30 a.m. at the Buttonwood Senior Center. That will be followed by a meeting with The Standard-Times editorial board. Sen. Kerry also is scheduled to appear in Fall River for a panel discussion of the Head Start program for children.

Asked whether seniors seem to be passionate about their issues at the moment, the senator said, "It's hard to tell. That's one reason I want to come down. I think a lot of folks right now are disaffected, they're turned off by what's happening. They almost don't pay attention unless it is in extremis. I think there's been a strange anesthetizing." >
