1. Thank you for posting it in this forum...
I wouldn't have seen it otherwise. I just read the column and sent him a get well e-mail. He sounds like his wonderful wit is with him, so I'd take that as a sure sign he's recovering well.

Thanks again gv!

2. I'm so glad he's recovering
My dad died of a burst aneurysm. Oliphant is a very lucky man to have survived. Sending prayers and positive vibes his way. There are so few real journalists left, and he's one of them. I wonder if Kerry has had a chance to visit him? I know they've been friends since the 70's.

4. Thanks, globalvillage
It's been several years, so the pain of the loss has dulled somewhat. But it never goes away completely. He was only 64 when he died.

5. Oliphant is a good guy
And is a fair columnist who does his homework. His interview with Kerry at the JFK Library Awards was excellent. I wish him GodSpeed in his recovery and I'm glad to hear him on the Franken Show and to see him writing his column agian.

Not to act too puffed up or anything, but I blogged about this in March.

    Tom Oliphant

I was wondering where Tom Oliphant's regular Boston Globe columns had gone. I'm late with the news, but fortunately, being late allows me to report that he is recovering nicely after a health scare.

Tom Oliphant, Washington-based columnist for the Boston Globe and a regular on “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” underwent surgery last week after suffering a brain aneurysm.

A source said that when Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), a longtime friend of Oliphant, heard the news, he called his health policy staff in and told them to find the best medical care they could for him. Fortunately, a Kennedy spokeswoman said, “it turns out that had it” all along. He was checked in at the well-regarded Inova Hospital in Fairfax.

Oliphant, who is married to CBS News’s Susan Spencer, is said to be doing well.

Tom is one of the good journalists - by that I mean he is a writer who is ruled by reason. I admire him greatly for his thoughtful columns and for his calm.

We wish him a speedy and uneventful recovery.

9. Thanks, but really
I had noticed his column was AWOL and went hunting for the reason why.

I love Oliphant - partly because of his genuine understanding of who JK is. If only the world would have listened to the words of the people who know him best - Tom Oliphant, Charlie Pierce, Robert Reich, Jim Carroll, etc. we'd be in a different place right now.
