GOP's other plans in MA (Sen in 2008)

I saw in the Lowell Sun this weekend that some in the MA GOP are trying to get Gov. Romney to run for re-election and then the Senate in 2008.

Well that would be interesting.

1. All the more reason to defeat him in 2006

If he did win in 2006, I guess that would make it harder for Kerry to run for both. But theoretically, he could run against Kerry for Senate or President. Or, maybe, if Mass, lets Kerry run for both, Romney could run for both too!

Not to mention, it would ruin Corsi's plan of running - and he did such a great job in turning out a large crowd to march from Philadelphia to DC with him - I grew up in a house with twice his turnout! There were 12 of us.

2. I don't think he'd do that well against Kerry

The majority of Massholes are Dems or Dem-leaning independents, even though we've had an annoying habit of electing Rethug governors in recent history. Mittens has pissed off a lot of Massholes in the last year, especially with his trash-talking tour of states with early primaries. I don't think he'll get reelected governor, if he chooses to run. And I don't think we (as a state) would abandon Kerry if Romney ran against him. If Kerry runs for the presidency in '08, there are quite a few excellent Dems who are chomping at the bit to run for his Senate seat, including about half of our congressional delegation.

3. We have a very deep bench.

There are at least 8 Dems that I know of who would take a good hard look at that race. It remains to be seen what will happen. It is illegal for Sen. Kerry to run concurrently for the Prez & Senate, so ti will be interesting either way.

I think Mittens would get stomped. But it is an interesting idea. Some of the state GOP doesn't think he stands much of a chance as a Prez candidate.

7. Too bad Kerry can't run for both.

4. I thought that Romney is NOT running for governor in '06

Because of his run to the right (especially Stem Cell Research), I thought that he had presidential ambitions, and in order to cater to Republican primary voters, he had to show them he cared about conservative issues. You can't appeal to Repub voters AND the state of Massachusetts at the same time, can you?

5. Mittens hasn't said anything official

He's keeping his options open. But personally, I don't see MA voters getting taken in by his dog-and-pony show a second time. He's revealed himself to be pretty far to the right of the average MA voter. And as far as a national race goes, I can't see all those rethug fundies voting for a Mormon, even if he is a right-winger.

I can't see the true Rethug Fundies voting for a Morman either. That concept would be very difficult for them to wrap their minds around.

8. I think that there are some MA Repubs

who are trying to get Mittens to see reason. They would rather have Kerry run for Prez, give up his seat and have a well-known Rethug challenge in a wide-open race. Mittens is the best butt on the bench of the MA Rethugs. (They have almost no bench at all. Just Mittens and his Barbie-doll Lt. Gov, Kerry Healey.)

There are a lot of Dems who would go for that seat. It would be a friggin free-for-all. And it would be good for the State to shake things up. But, nothing is written in stone yet, it is way, way too early.

9. And Healey is definitely not ready for prime time

I doubt many people had even heard of her before Mittens chose her as his running mate.
