or do they make some sort of sense logistically.

Not that I wouldn't put it past Bush to reward the South and punish the North for their votes. But I was wondering if folks could see good reasons for which bases are being closed, and which are gaining jobs.

I figured the folks in here would have a level headed view of the issue.

1. I don't really have any specifics about this but

my boss went down to Fayetteville, NC last week to look for an apartment for her daughter who will be moving there in the fall to attend school. They were going around to different apartments with a real estate agent and he said it was lucky that she was looking for a place now, because within the next six months or so the troop size at Ft. Bragg will dramatically increase as other bases are closed and the troops moved to Ft. Bragg. The agent also said that a ton of on-base housing was currently under construction, so these plans have apparently been underway for a while.

I don't know that that's a reward for the way NC voted or not. I really don't have any more info on it other than that anecdotal tidbit (sorry).

2. I think so
New England is getting hit pretty hard, especially CT, NH and ME. MA is also getting hit, but not as hard as the others. We'd already been whacked pretty hard in earlier base closings. There's not a whole lot left in MA that makes any sense to close.

3. To the victor, go the spoils
there are 28,000 jobs on the chopping block in this round of national base closings. 14,000 of them are in the 5 New England states that have base closings scheduled.

I think that about answers the question. The NH/ME base closing of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is actually devastating. I think, if this stands, that it might cost Maine a Repub Senator or two. (Nothing seems to affect NH. Those people just keep voting for Rethugs. I think there's something in the water in the Granite State.)
