Pix of me and Governors Neapolitano and Warner at the party
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 04:32 PM by saracat
leaders afternoon meeting!

Guess what Kerrycrats? I liked Warner! A surprise for me. And I was the only one to ask a question about abortion and he handled it well! He is adamantly pro choice and says so, but has trouble with late term. He says he is "wrestling with it" I said they are so rare, it should be just considered a medical decision. Anyway here is mu first try at a pix! I had a haircut disaster earlier in the day so it isn't my best shot but I want to see if this works! BTW, another point of interest for me was my husband supervised and managed the first Nextell installation in the world, he ran the first real telephone call, and I never realized Warner was one of the founders of Nextell! I used to test the sound quality of the phoned. If I said it sounded like a tunnel, they needed better software! Anyway, DH really liked Warner and they had a bit in common. It is the first time DH has really liked anyone. All this being said JK is still MY guy, and neither of us are convinced about a Warner presidency.

1. My biggest concern with Warner
is that he is a one-term Governor. He has no national experience. I'm glad to hear that he's pro-choice though.

Sounds like ths was a great and informative meeting. What else did he have to say? Did he talk about trade or Iraq or budgets?

2. Yes. He is is favor of trade but done correctly so our rights are
protected and we also provide jobs for the US. He says we have to show that Democrats can be pro investment. He wants the UN and the other countries to bear the burden of Iraq. He feels , I think , it is time for us to move on, but we have to make provisions before we go. Sort of what everyone says. Talks a lot about the deficit.Favorite phrase is the Repukes promise you the world and tax cuts but don't have any way to pay for it! He wants us to reclaim being the party of "fiscal responsibility". He also wants us to offer a safe landing place for the moderate Republicans. He says we have to be inclusive and point out that we are the party that welcomes everyone. He is very big on reaching out to those republicans that are disenfranchised. He said we need them to win. I said that was great provided we don't ignore our base. And I do think that is going to be the trick. It is difficult to pick up the moderate repukes without alienating some of our base. I think it can be done but we have to be careful.
He also talked a lot about religion and how you can reflect faith without advocating any particular religion.

3. The idea of not surrendering religion to the Rethugs
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 08:14 PM by TayTay
is a big thing with the Dems. It's why Howard Dean is pushing for a separate council to report to the Dems on liberal Christianity and theology. The Dems are merely reclaiming their own on this front. We friggin OWN this issue. The Rethugs have been endorsed by ministers that have removed the intense Christian concern for poverty and social justice from their pulpits. All morality has been reduced to gay marriage and abortion. This is just plain wrong.

The Rethugs are actually afraid of this. They know that they are vulnerable on this front. The newest push in the Dem agenda will be on fiscal budgets that are moral entities and should reflect societies concern for the least among us.

People who read the Thomas FRank book "What's the Matter with Kansas" remember that one of the Rethug tricks to keep the populace docile is to convince them that the natural order of the universe is to have a tiny select number of very rich who are, by implication, favored of God and that the free market is an eyelash away from being sacred screed. (Seriously, it is taught with all the trappings of religious dogma.) The real problem with this is that the Bible says no such thing. The Bible is replete with verses that condemn societies that concentrate wealth into a few hands and do not give everyone a chance at economic security. Democrats have to overcome their aversion to talking about religion and do what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr did; preach it, live it, teach it. We friggin OWN this issue. We need to take it back.

4. Sounds awesome
Sounds like it was a nice meeting. Only thing I'm not sure with Warner is Bilderberg. I guess maybe a little too tinfoil hatty for me I guess. But I'm willing to listen more and hear more about him. :) I like how we need to claim back fisacial responsibility indeed and show how the republicans have gotten away from that and are now just coropted and everything. We have to take it back for sure. Go Warner!

7. Didn't I say Warner was alright?
Thanks, Saracrat, for the pic and the summary of your meeting. Once again, I think we should just let the primaries play out, and let the best man or woman win. As far as him being a one term governor (which is required by law), Warner also has a ton of private sector business experience which I think should count. If we want a politician with a lot of foreign policy experience, then we'll need to pick a senator, but conventional wisdom and history are against us for that. Governors have a better chance of winning. Look, this is all theory -- obviously JK is my fave -- I'm just saying we shouldn't discount Warner for lack of foreign policy experience. Neither * nor Clinton had foreign policy experience and they both won. Unlike *, Warner was a SUCCESSFUL businessman who made his OWN fortune. A lot of people will be attracted to this, including moderate Republicans. If Warner can assemble a top rate foreign policy advisory circle, maybe this can narrow the gap.

8. The only problem is a lack of charisma. He is much better in small groups
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 01:38 PM by saracat
and one on one. He "official" speechmaking style is not impressive. I am not convinced by him. When I first met JK, I thought, "this guy will be president". I didn't get that at all with Warner. I like Edwards better than Warner,as he has an ability to connect. We are in for a long ride! Fasten your seatbelts its gonna be a bumpy night!

9. Glad to here he was adamantly pro choice
I could live with such qualms about late term. I think that most attempts to legislate against it are motivated by overall opposition to abortion and attempts to gradually restrict it, but as long as he is really adamantly pro choice I don't see late term as a major issue.

His biggest advantage is being a southern governor, but beyond that I haven't been very excited by him. That's partially the media's fault, not necessarily his. Whenever I hear about him, it is about his biography. If they mention issues, they talk about him being moderate, but that doesn't really tell me much about him, and the media avoids specifics. I'l also particularly interested in positions on health care, but state health care issues are so different than federal that his record as Governor doesn't tell me much.
